Connecting to Linksys Router

I am trying to connect to my at home wifi. The phone appears to connect, but when I try to open a web page, I get "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server." Email doesn't connect either.

When I check the wifi settings I get:
IP 192.168.0.23
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Router 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.1
The rest are blank.

It is a WAP setting, but the passkey seemed to work fine. I;ve read through a bunch of threads on this, but haven't seen any that actually get to the bottom of the problem.

Finally, I have the latest firmware, according to the linksys site.

Hi Lumpyhyer,

Your DNS setting appears to be pointing to your router. I don't think this is right, it should probably be the address of the actual DNS server you are using. The error message you're getting would be consistent with a DNS problem, as well. You might want to check that setting on your router, or try setting the DNS value manually.

The DNS value is wrong; it should be a public DNS (usually the name server of your ISP), not the router's address. Try tapping "forget this network", then connect to it again. If you manually entered the values you must enter a public DNS address.

Does it ask you for a password? If it does, you can find it at the bottom of your router.

I manually set my DNS to the value on my laptop and it seems to have fixed things. Just as an aside, I am connecting through and access point and it should have passed the approriate DNS value, but didn't. I know a lot of people on the boards are running in to a similar problem, hopefully this will help quickly solve them.

I think I am having the same problem. My iPhone seems to connect when I enter my security code but then it just goes back to Edge. When I looked a the details of the wifi connection that it didn't have a all the setting. I will try manually setting them tonight. Thanks.

Your symptom is different, because it goes back to EDGE. If you have a linksys router your first step should be to make sure you have the latest firmware release. After that you should tell the iPhone to "forget" the connection, then try to connect again when it prompts.

If this doesn't fix it there are further steps, but just entering values that the router should have supplied automatically can break other connections in your network.

Your are correct. Point of clarification. I am using a DLink access point. It just doesn't seem to want to get the proper settings from the AP.

Lawrence Finch,

As a point of correction, many routers do act as a relay for looking up DNS information, and the router's IP address being the DNS address to use will work.

However, if the router does this, and has stopped responding to DNS inquiries, restarting the router should resolve it.

Nobody mentioned to make sure DHCP IS ENABLED on your wifi router. Hope this helps.

Ah, but that assumes that you are actually using DHCP. 🙂 (I don't, myself; it's easy enough for me to manage my IP addresses manually.)

In any case, Lumpyhyer's iPhone had a valid IP address, so likely DHCP was in fact working, or was not needed...
