Sharing & Permissions

I'm running Leopard (10.5.1) and at work, when i get a file transfered to my drop box and i place it to my desktop to work on it, i have to make a copy of it first and work on the copy because it won't let me save my work on the original file that got transfered to my drop box.

I acces to the File info window (Apple+i) and scroll down to Sharing and Permissions, i notice 3 users:
- Nobody
- (unknown)
- Everyone

How do i change the Nobody user into my user so i can work on the original file and not the copy?

And what is the purpose of the + and - symbols?

Thanxx!

I've experienced seemingly related problems with Sharing & Permissions.

Quick background context: I had to create a new user for myself and delete the old user ID because it was the only way to get iSync to finally work. I subsequently moved all my pictures, documents etc to my newly created user before deleting the old user ID. I gave my new ID read and write permissions at the home folder level and selected "apply to enclosed items".

Although that worked on the surface (the new ID is listed with read & write access), in many cases, I still have to type in a password to change/move the item (or sub-folder) - and in many cases it copies, (rather than moves) the item (even though it's on the same drive - eg from my downloads folder to my documents folder). Oddly, there are also two "everyone" users listed - one has "Custom Access", one has "Read only". I can't delete either one. The only fix for me has been to give Read & Write access to both "everyone" users. It's a pain because I have to do it for EVERY item. I'd love a utility or fix that just cleaned it all up once and for all.

I followed the instructions on previous reply link, logged into terminal but didn't change anything whatsoever.

That crash is fixed in 10.5.2, and would have been worked around by the steps in the article Niel posted. I suspect you missed something in the article. It should have changed "(unknown)" to your user name, with an '_' in front of it. Try again, making absolutely sure that you fallowed the steps in the article exactly.
