How to improve sound quality from itunes?

Love my new ipod touch, really a great piece of equipment. I am really happy with the sound quality when I upload cd's, but hear a lot of scratchy sounds when I download a song from itunes. Can I change a setting somewhere to improve quality? I just got the touch, so I'm only listening to it with the earbuds it comes with.

In iTunes
1. Click Edit
2. Click Prefernces
3. Click Advance
4. Click importing
5. Change it to higher quality (256 kbps)

Now find the song you want to convert right click and select Convert Selection to ACC

BEWARE: this will increase the size of the song

When he says "downloading a song from iTunes" I assume he means buying from the store?
If so, the only suggestion I have is to turn EQ off.

Thanks, I did this but itunes wouldn't convert the song because it's protected - wish I would have searched for this before I downloaded!

You can't convert protected purchases. And, it wouldn't do any good. You can't add back information that isn't there. Converting from 128 to 256 will not get you better sound, just a bigger file.

You can't convert UP!
You can't create data that doesn't exist.
You can convert down, but you can't make a file better.
Also, converting an already compressed file (AAC, MP3, etc) to another bitrate degrades the quality a lot.
Your solution only helps for ripping from CD.
