Are you happy with your AT & T service?

I'm just doing a bit of research before I open and activate my new iPhone, which my wife gave me for my birthday (woot!). Before I sign up for a two-year plan with AT & T, I was wondering what the experience of actual iPhone users is with AT & T. I was curious about things like coverage, customer service, and internet access over their EDGE network. My coverage area is the SF East Bay.
Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

I was a Verizon Wireless user for as long as they have been offering service and I used to travel all around the US, in the music industry. At the time VZW had the best coverage, and I was a bit worries with switching to AT&T for the iPhone, but I did and I am very happy with AT&T's coverage. I am in the DC Metro area and travel in and about the greater DC Metro area and along the NE Corridor to NJ/NY quite often. AT&T has great coverage. I have zero complaints with AT&T regarding coverage area, even a few spots where AT&T is better the VZW. Over-all an A+ rating from me for AT&T coverage.

I live in eastbay (Fremont). Coverage is fine. I was with AT&T for about 3yrs before I got iPhone. I don't get good signal inside my house, but I can't blame AT&T because my wife who has a SE 810i has very good coverage inside and out and so did I with my old SE T616. Trying with another phone as suggested by one of the other posters may not work since the iPhone seems behave differently. I'd say try it, u'd love the phone. U have the option of returning it (ofcourse u'd lose $40 restocking fee if u did)

Not at all. I left Sprint to go to the iPhone. In my routine, there were two places I could not use my phone. There was a "dead spot" in my parents' home and I had trouble in a local tunnel under 80 feet of water. With AT&T there are more places that I cannot use it than I can use it. I can stand in one place and watch the phone switch from 5 bars with EDGE to nothing and "No Service." I usually cannot use the phone in my own home in the middle of Virginia Beach, VA. As much as I love the iPhone as a device, I think I might get rid of it if I could get out of my AT&T contract.

This is relative based on location and the places one frequents most. Certainly there are some former Sprint subscribers that can say the same about Sprint compared to AT&T depending on location. I switched from Verizon to AT&T 3-4 months prior to the iPhone being available for reception issues I had with Verizon at my house and some of the places I frequent most which I don't have with AT&T.

You had the option to cancel your AT&T contract within the first 30 days without being charged an early contract termination fee and without penalty.

Yeah. I get that I had that option. That is not helpful at this point. Frankly, it did not seem quite so bad at first. Now that I have needed to borrow others' phones about a dozen times, it seems pretty bad. The fact remains that the coverage is utterly miserable in the largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in spite of the fact that AT&T's coverage map shows that my area is well covered. I'm not a fan of looking numbers up on my iPhone so I can dial them on my landline.
Telling people, "well, you could have gotten rid of it" after the fact is not particularly constructive.

No, the coverage map is a huge lie. It shows that I have the strongest possible signal strength, which is completely untrue.

I can only rarely make or receive calls in my house, even standing next to open windows. Failed calls are commonplace. I tried to call 611 for customer service the other day but, of course, the call wouldn't go through.

I'm in Berkeley for god's sake. I had similar problems when I lived in the middle of San Francisco but at least there I had a "phone call" room I could go to when I wanted to make a clear call.
