Safari 3.0 > 2.0?

Ever since we updated from OS X 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0 was installed we cannot open up Safari. All it does is crash. We tried to fix it by using the trick where you go to Finder: User Account>Library>Caches and move the Safari folder to the trash, but that didn't work. So instead of playing with it to try to get it to work, we'd like to just go back and use Safrai 2.0 again, as it worked flawlessly. How do we do this? Just go to Applications > Safari 3.0 and trash it? Where do we then find Safari 2.0 to reinstall again? Thanks 🙂

I just recently updated Safari through software update, and I'm finding things I dislike about it. I used to be able to type when I open a new window, and it would type into the url, so I didn't have to open a new window, and then go double click on the url, and then start typing. Also, when I hold down apple and click a link to open a new window, it opens behind my current window. I'm hating these two things with a passion and would love to downgrade too. I too patiently await the solution to our conundrum.

Most issues with Safari 3 are solvable - can you post the crash report?

Safari 2 is not available as a separate download as the various versions of it are designed to work with specific OS X releases.

To revert to Safari 2 you could try downloading the 10.4.10 combo update and using [Pacifist|www.charlessoft.com] to extract the Safari package. Note that this means Safari 2 will be working with a version of WebKit (the bit that draws the webpages) that was intended for Safari 3 (and all the other applications in 10.4.11 that were tested against this version of WebKit, such as Dashboard, Mail, Help Viewer etc.)

If you are updating Safari (or just have):

Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.

So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!

Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard widgets etc also rely.

Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 3.0.4.

No third party add-ons are being used. I forgot about using Pacifist, but I'm concerned about using Safari 2.0 with 10.4.11 if the webkit is different. So now the question is how do we switch from 10.4.11 to 10.4.10, or do we need to install FireFox for our browser? Well post the crash screen info in a minute just in case we can still fix this.

Hi,

and also it says that we are using 'Growl" (which we have installed) BUT it has been completely turned off until we can fix Safari.

If it's appearing in the crash report, Safari is loading it irrespective if it's disabled. 🙂

Try moving all the items you have in these 2 folders onto your Desktop:

/Users/YourUsername/Library/InputManagers/

/Library/InputManagers/

Now retry Safari.

Let us know if that helps or not.

First try this:

Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.

Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:

form values
download.plist

Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete

com.apple.Safari.plist

Repair permissions.

Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

If not, rather than downgrade to 10.4.10, try downloading the full 10.4.11 combo updater and installing it again. But before doping so, repair permissions and repair your hard disk from the install disk.

Where are you trying to open it from, the Dock or from its icon in the Application folder?

It has to be in the Application folder, not in a sub-folder, and you must not rename it.

If it just the dock icon that doesn't work, trash that and create a new one the usual way.

To your previous question how do you get back to OS X.4.10, do an archive and install then download the OS X.4.10 combo update at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdateppc.html

Update:

Today we re-installed Safari 2.0 from Pacifist/Tiger CD. We then ran permissions. To our surprise +(and delight)+ Safari now opens up and works again. The only thing that is a little 'weird' is that when we ran the Software Updater from the Apple menu, it didn't say that there were any updates for Safari. Other than that it's at least opening up now, so that's a little progress.

Hi,

Safari 3 only comes as part of the 10.4.11 update. It's not available as an individual update. Try re-running the 10.4.11 combo update (available from the Downloads link at the top of this page) if you want it back.

But, Safari 3 changes the way InputManagers are handled, so if you still have the InputManager I highlighted above installed, then that is likely why Safari 2 works for you now and probably why Safari 3 won't work.
