Avoid Out of the Country (roaming) Charges?

I'm going to Colombia next week for a week and I'm thinking about taking my iPhone there. I plan on using it mostly for the iPod features, and maybe some Internet too. So my question is if there is a way how I can disable the phone and EDGE features, still be able to use my iPod features, and have Wi-Fi available WITHOUT getting additional charges on my bill. I have heard that putting the iPhone on Airplane Mode doesn't always work.

Your help and advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
