MIDI Keyboard Input Help Please Yamaha PSR-290 Keyboard

Hello, I am buying a 20" iMac this Christmas, and I am very Interested in creating some Jazz Tracks in GarageBand.

I have a Yamaha PSR-290 Keyboard, and I would like to use this in GB to input some piano into my songs. How can i connect my keyboard to my iMac i.e not a line-in.
Can I use a USB MIDI IN/OUT connector

Such as that one?

Thanks for any help in advance, greatly appreciated.
Any other suggestions are welcome, but i would rather not go over the £50 mark.

Also, can u input piano chords without a MIDI keyboard, out of curiosity...
Thanks again, Greg.

Wow, thanks for the speedy reply HangTime, now i know why you were in the top users!

Did you have a look at the link, would you say it is mac compatible, it says nothing about not being Mac compatible.
Also, for the non-MIDI input of chords into Garageband, do you have to input each note of the chord, or can you just type it in e.g. Gm7?
Thanks

i've never heard of that brand/model, so i don't know anything about. unfortunately a good rule of thumb is; if it doesn't state that it's Mac Compatible, it probably isn't. there have also been a rash of problems people have been having with Mac os x 10.5 and waiting for companies to cpome out with updated drivers, so it' shard to tell which interfaces will work right out of the box at the moment.

here are a couple that have worked well in the past, but you'll have to do a little research to find out if they work with 10.5 yet (click the "MIDI Only) link in the right hand sidebar)

you can't type in a chord name, no. you can "draw"/place each note on the staff, or try using "Musical Typing" (Note: http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#midikeys ). all in all a real keyboard is the best solution with alt methods being okay to touch things up, IMO

yes, of course, but it may be a while after Christmas until I get it. Looking on eBay, I can find one of the M-Audio products you recommended on the bulletandbones website within my price budget. I may look into this further, as I have known about M-Audio for a while now.
I will post back to help others in my situation whatever the case is though.
Thank you greatly for all the help though, greatly appreciated, couldn't have done it by myself! Only 9 days left now 🙂
