No audio from MacBook headphone jack

MacBook 2.16 GHz. (purchased a couple of months ago). Leopard 10.5.1.

Headphone jack has been working fine. Hard to pinpoint (I can't confirm) but the headphone jack seemed to stop working after doing the latest Quicktime 7.3.1 update(?)

Internal speakers work. When I plug in my headphones, the sound out preference panel indicates "headphones" but no audio comes through. Has tried several headphones, earbuds etc...

Any suggestions on how to fix this.

Just tried now, don't know if it can help... :

When I am on the settings for external sound, they are by default on internal speakers

If I plug in my headphones they change to "headphones" automatically and sound comes from the headphones, when I unplug them, the settings are automatically back to internal speakers.

If your MacBook doesn't react like this you might have a problem with its connection and need to get it fixed...

Yes, In System Preferences/Sound/Output (when I plug in the headphones) it switches from Internal Speakers Built-in to Headphones But as mentioned, no sound comes out when using any of the headphones I try. The MacBook's internal speakers are working OK.

This is really annoying because I reply on my headphone jack for audio output to several sources. Especially at band practice and for work. Besides, this is a brand new machine. 😟

Well, it appears that the problem I was having with my Macbook (no audio from the headphone jack) has reappeared. I'm not longer getting sound from any headphones, although in System Preferences/Sound the 'Headphones' appears as a device when the headphones are plugged in to the jack. When I remove the headphone mini-plug System Prefs/Sound reverts back to 'Internal speaker.'

Audio from the internal speakers is working. I have reset the Power Management Unit gain, this time it did not help.

Any suggestions?

Brand new out of the box, this thing has a faulty headphone out. No sound through headphone, itunes stops, pointer turns into spinning circle. Audio/Midi setup & sound preferences says that it's a "Digital Out" not a "Headphone out". I've been waiting on software updates or whatever, but nothing's happening.

Does it also have a red light coming out of the hole? I hear sometimes the dual headphone jack/mini-optical out gets stuck in digital optical mode. Something about trying an object in the hole to clear it.
