Mac OS X (10.5.1)
This is happening to many, many, many people. Read the thread
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6117480 and you can find there a workaround for after you restore your desktop files. (Hopefully you have a backup and/or Time Machine). This is NOT your setup but is a problem that Intuit must fix.
First you must find out if Quickbooks 2006 is compatible with Leopard. i would email them.
Second, I suggest you use TM to revert to the time just before you installed QB2006 and wait for an answer from Intuit or from someone else who is using it.
Gofigger,
Great minds think alike! At approx the same time today I opened Quickbooks after not using it. It updated and then "WHAM" my desktop and all the files I had been saving were gone. Tried repairing permissions and tried using Main Menu freeware but nothing. I have to believe that it is QB that is the problem now that I read your post. Hopefully my info is still somewhere on my puter. Don't have TM hooked up yet and my previous backup is about a month old. My disk space is the same so maybe everything is still here...

if you don't have a backup and your information is extremely important. STOP USING THAT COMPUTER, get it to a digital forensics outfit and they CAN bring back the data. A public "undelete" program can help you too, but this is not as reliable, and as long as your computer is on it may be over writing your data that otherwise could be saved.
Well... based on Quickbook forum discussion board myself along with many others were hit by this "problem" from Intuit... unfortunately their option of "do not reboot" did not help me as I had to get back on the internet to try and find out what the problem was!!
Someone from Intuit did try and contact me today and according to the discussion groups and notices at Intuit the "problem has been fixed...
Only trouble is I am still missing my desktop files !! I am sure much more to follow..
+How did OSX (10.4.11) ALLOW a program to change a System file - ie, the Desktop directory.+
Not trying to justify anything ... but the desktop file is owned by whoever logs in, even if he is just regular user, and not an admin.
Terminal commands may have be written to protect you from changing the desktop, but there are underlying APIs that don't. And since the user owns his own desktop, it can be changed by programs he is running. All AFAIK. And this is RE Tiger, which is what you are talking about, though this is the Leopard forum.
