excuse me.. silly rabbit... did you read any of my past posts... no.. so you have no frame of reference here, Donny. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know...

I already explained my situation.. and it was deleted for no reason.. I'm sorry but it was detailed and had more than 10 replies..

anyway.. give me some help then silly... instead of just perusing posts looking for someone to parent..

I reinstalled leopard, reformatted my external (all 1tb of it).. used the proper GUID partition map.. and am still having the same problem... it never finishes a back up... sometimes it only makes it 8kb, sometimes it makes it through 75 gb... in the console when it fails.. it will say backupd error (-48) on any random file.. sometimes it's a system file.. sometimes it's a file on my desktop.. changes kinds of files, location, sizes.. etc..

there was a link in my past post from a very helpful peggy that suggested it was a pdf indexing issue.. so i excluded my folder with pdfs in it.. spotlight is indexing properly now.. but time machine is still failing me.

so.. see any reason to delete this one as well? besides bad pr... I am following everything i can find and it's still not working.. and i'm not even a novice user.. I've been on a mac for 10 years, and know a lot more than most users.

The GUID partitioning is not nearly as critical as the formatting. Double check it in Disk Utility. Click on the indented icon beneath your Time Machine drive. The formatting should be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If the formatting is incorrect follow the directions in a this article.

That said, I would doubt that this error is being caused by a formatting issue unless it relates to case sensitivity. You might want to take Time Machine's word for it and assume it's finding some duplicate file names that is making it unhappy. I've never used it but this shareware says it will locate duplicate file names for you and it's Leopard compatible.

i downloaded tidy up, but i'm confused.. I mean.. why would I not want to have a single duplicate on my machine.. what about repeated files such as the signature in an email.. what mandtaes it as a duplicate? being in the same folder.. i mean i see in the program you can change what it looks for.. but.. and why would a file having two versions cause time machine to mess up.. shouldn't it just copy both over?...

Interesting,
I did the 'non-recommended' update install and didn't have any of these permissions issues. I did have the blue screen of death on restart, but it was easily solved by removing the app enhancer folder via a firewire connection to my trusty old iMac.

Is it possible the archive install could be the reason for these permission glitches and obscure errors? There definitely seems to be a connection. Time Machine is doing it's thing without any trouble after the upgrade install.

I know this post is not really any help, but it is food for thought for those considering installing Leopard.
