Iphone gets fake IP address on WPA home network

Dear all,

Firstly, please excuse me if this has been aswered in another tread.

I have a home wireless, WPA/WPA2 configured network through an Apple Airport express. The key is 13 digits and contains both numerical and alphabetic characters.

My iphone gets to connect to the network with full range. I type the correct password. But it gets a fake IP adress 169.x.x.x kind. Internet does not work on the iphone. I cannot surf nor check my email. Safari always displays the "cannot connect to the server" message.

If I chage the Network security settings to WEP, with 13 digits password as well, my iphone gets to connect with a real IP (10.0.1.4). Internet works properly then.

I have tried to change the DHCP internet setting on my airport to get a different IP address format but the iphone always gets those fake IPs.

Consequently I need WEP settings for my iphone to work but I would like to have a WPA network.

Anyone knows what can I do to solve this problem. Suggestions will be very appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I know this sounds stupid, but get as close as you can to your access point. My macbook and phone will not pull an IP address if i am upstairs at my house, even though they have a 75% signal. This is a new thing that just started last month, not sure if it is the DHCP request being sent to the key exchange or what. but after the address is obtained i can move anywhere in the house and it works just fine.

So try that and let me know.

Hello Alehandro

I do apologize for the issue you are experiencing. Posted below are some troubleshooting steps I believe will assist in this issue.

Step 1: Turn Security off. Can you then get access and a valid IP address of 10?

Step 2: Choose WPA or WPA2 by itself if it will let you. Otherwise choose WPA/WPA2 Personal and instead of a 13 character. And see if this poses different results.

If you choose to keep the network as is. Try this on the iPhone. Choose to Forget the network, then go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings and attempt to access again.

If you are still getting a 169 try this. Disconnect power to the router/express for 5 min. Then reconnect. Also power off the iPhone during this time. Power on Router/Express first... Wait.... then power on iPhone. See if this then picks up a valid IP address.

My other suggestion. Ensure the Router/Express has updated software as well as iPhone is up to date with iPhone Software 1.1.2
