o2 usage counter

Just bought an iPhone and due to the tight allowances on the basic Tarrif I need to keep a very close eye on my usage.

Apple saw fit to incorporate a poorly thought out and grossly inadequate counter (which combines incoming and outgoing times with no breakdown and no clues).

AT&T appear to have incorporated a free text on request service with an upto to date tally. However o2 only have a website that is not iPhone friendly and takes a logging plus several slowly loading pages before displaying out of date statistics.

Is there a better way to access this info on o2? When I phoned them they just told me it was my resposibilty to keep my own record. They supply no propper tools or solutions. One could almost suspect that they want you to go over your limit 😉

The iPhone's data plan with O2 is not unlimited and if not, what is the limit?

Not sure what a detailed breakdown for data sent and received with the iPhone accomplishes in this regard. If your billing cycle begins on the 7th of each month, reseting the statistics resets the Sent and Received with EDGE or via cellular data access which is most important in regards to going over whatever the limit is for the billing cycle.

My last 3 or 4 Sony Ericssons have had separate outgoing, incoming and total minute counters which I just reset every month. they also had an SMS counter. Very useful and not exactly rocket science. My partner has an o2 PAYG tariff and every time she sends a text or makes a call she recieves an instant SMS with her current balance. AT&T do a similar thing on the iPhone in the States but there doesn't appear to be any kind of convenient, accurate method here in the UK.

OK, is there a direct, up to date link that doesn't require a login and going through 3 or 4 links to see yesterday (or the day before's) data?

Many, many websites are now formatted for iPhone so why isn't the site of the exclusive carrier iPhone friendly?

Why does this phone not have even the basic functionality to tell you whether the last call was incoming or outgoing and how long it lasted? Maybe it does which is the point of my original thread. Anyone know?

A good question for O2 and O2 only.

Why does this phone not have even the basic functionality to tell you whether the last call was incoming or outgoing and how long it lasted?

Don't know and a good question for Apple, not for fellow users and not something I care about or am remotely interested in. Are you within the return period for your iPhone purchase? If so and since having this information is obviously so very important to you, I would seriously consider returning it for credit or selling it and using another phone.

Geez, I didn't think RDH's question was unreasonable, although rdh may not find the answer he was looking for.

I also found it a surprise that the call duration counter on the iPhone didn't separate outgoing from incoming. It's pretty obvious a cellphone wouldn't track night vs day, or mobile to mobile, but outgoing to incoming isn't difficult, and other phones do track this.

O2's site is the only way I found to track outgoing minutes. I'm on the 200 plan because on average I don't break the 200 minute call barrier that often. Seemed stupid to pay a tenner extra times 18 months when you might only use say 230 minutes once a quarter (and I could never see myself sending 500 texts in a month). The O2 jump from 200 to 600 minutes is so big as to be a trap for medium users, so being alert and tracking your usage is just prudent if you've just invested heavily in the handset and are staring down the barrel of another 16/17 months outlay.

But as we've established, aside from O2's site, which is not as user friendly and direct as it can be, you can't track your outgoing call minutes. Nice idea to send to Apple as a feature request (via the other link of course....)

On top of not understanding the point of the post but continuing to comment it now turns out that you don't care anyway. Please leave this post for people who do care and understand. Thankfully other users get the point - I was looking for other o2 user opinions and whether there is a work around.

I have no intention of getting rid of my iPhone because of this point but it does need raising (which I've done with Apple and o2).

When my partner has the cheapest possible phone and deal with o2 it is not unreasonable to expect a similar service for a premium phone and contract!

Why do you need to know call & text usage every day? It's not as it they are charging extortionate rates if you exceed 200 mins/200 txt per month - the prices are quite affordable if you go over slightly.

If you find yourself using much more than those given, why not just fork out another tenner for 600mins/500 txt.

Er OK I'll just throw another £180 away rather than know where I standd because THAT is what o2 want me to do! You may have more money than sense but I don't!
