I need to convert mpg to mov files...

Hello people... I have mpg files that I need to convert to mov files... is there a program that works with Quicktime to do this. I know I can download the MPEG-2 add on... I just need to know if that will apply to ALL MPG files... so far all of the programs that say they can do it (Perian, EasyWMV, and ReelBean have all been flops... is there anything out there that will work WITH Leopard... I am running it on a Powerboog G4... Help if you can.

Thanks

Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

You're looking to transcode MPEG-2 to MOV, right? Perian doesn't do any transcoding; it only allows playback. EasyWMV and ReelBean don't specify MPEG-2 as viable input sources on their sites either.

A shareware transcoder (but too complicated for a newb like me) is ffmpegX. They specifically state that it +"Reads the following input formats: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, .... and even more formats"+. I've not used it, so I can't attest to its effectiveness.

A commercial transcoder is VisualHub. According to them +"... all forms of MPEG video ... are supported"+. If your viewing size is less than 640x480, you might just try their freebie iSquint (which I use to get videos onto my iPod).

The expensive Sorenson Squeeze lists MPEG-2 as one of their input types, and lists MOV as one of their output types. I'm not a video editor, so I know nothing about this program (other than it's a well-known one). They do have a free trial, so you can test to see if it does what you want.

As for the Quicktime MPEG-2 add-on, it seems to be what you're looking for. According to the description +"... your MPEG-2 video content can be imported into QuickTime Pro and exported to other formats ..."+, so if you have QTPro you can convert all your videos to MOV. The posted reviews, however, don't inspire confidence, lol!

I'm also having a problem opening an MPEG file with a QuickTime logo on it. If it just says MPEG, is that different than MPEG-1 or -2, etc? It's not encrypted and came from a family member. The Get Info box said open it with QuickTime but that didn't work. The error message I get says it's not a Movie file. How then do I find out what it is? Thought it was QuickTime.

I downloaded MPEG Slipstream and and changed the Get Info box to select Slipstream. That told me I don't have Apple QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component installed. W/O it I can't play or convert MPEG-2 files. Does that mean the file has been identified as an MPEG-2? I'm reluctant to pay for the software until I know it'll open this 11.1 MB file.

Can anyone help? This area is entirely new to me. Thanks.
