BMW Bluetooth and iPhone problem

Hi, i am experiencing problem with Bluetooth connectivity of my BMW E60 (530D) and my brand new iPhone. Every time i connect the iPhone and try to make a call using my car, connection drops and I can hear the person talking only through my iPhone. I owned N73, N95 and other Nokias and all of them worked just fine. Yet i am starting to regret buying an iPhone since i travel a lot and my BMW headset is my necessity.

I think this might be a United Kingdom issue, I was told that the Bluetooth software here is different the rest of Europe and the States. Perhaps the iPhone in the States has the software that BMW developed and the UK phones could not have the same.

Looking through the other iPhone issues, Bluetooth does seem to come up more often than not, looks like Apple have issues with various devices, not just BMW.

Happy days....

Well..to add another observation for another car: I drive a 2005 E63 (645 Ci) with Bluetooth and BMW Assist. Upon purchase, I had a Blackberry 8703 with Verizon...which worked beautifully. The contacts list synced fine, but more importantly, the bluetooth connection NEVER had delays in dialing/answering via iDrive, never dropped a call, and the audio reception was very strong (hint, remember these points w/the BB).

Two months ago, I bought an Iphone and made the switch to ATT. To my liking, as soon as I paired the iPhone and E63, the contacts list loaded fairly quickly (795 contacts). The first incoming call pops up on iDrive, music mutes, I click "accept", but I can't hear them. "Hello? Hello? Hello?"...then finally the connection. Someone noted the 10sec delay earlier. But even AFTER the connection is established, about every 2-3 minutes the persons voice goes out...I hear a "clicking noise" for another 2-3 seconds, and then their voice comes back on. The person on the other end does not hear the clicking nor do they complain about my voice going out, but I hear all of it via the car. Is anyone else experiencing these short outages during a conversation?? I assumed it was just ATT, but maybe it's WiFi being "on" (I never turn it off).

Last night (1/18/08) I upgraded to 1.1.3 on the iphone. I just went to my car the contacts synced just fine, so the upgrade does not prevent pairing. I have yet to make/receive a call, but I will see if turning off WiFi helps that. If so, my world is back to Verizon-like (stable)...but with a much better device.

I'll keep you posted on what I see ....

UPDATE

I'm at the BMW dealer now having what I'm told is the fix for the iPhone/BMW issue. I've had the 07 software update to my E60 525i 2004 and it did not work so BMW Germany have sent over this software fix for the BMW software and it should work, I will keep you all posted.

If it works I'll let you British people know who the dealer is as they are pretty switched onto this problem now.

After reading other posts I thought I will add my findings.

2005 55 520 D M'Sport with BMW BT + Engine upgrade

My iphone will pair 100% and work as it should up until the ignition is switched off, the second pairing will pair but will drop calls then freeze and then disconnect.
Spoke to 3 dealers and the Oct 2007 Software would cost between £150 inc vat to £250+vat, I was also told there will be a new upgrade in March 2008.
As I have read on this forum this doesn't always sort the problem so please be aware.
Also if you have had the BMW chipped for performance then you will quite possibly overwrite the programme at the same time..
Hope this is of help.

UPDATE

BMW have solved the problem with another software update from Germany. The original 09/07 BMW update did not work on my 520i E60 2004 but I took it back in the other day and it now works perfectly. So it's a BMW software fault nothing to do with the iPhone or WiFi.

Just a note of caution though, if you are thinking of taking your car in for this software upgrade, be prepared to be without the car for several days. Mine took 4 days and cost £195.00. I'm sure they wanted to charge more, I'm sure they will start charging more soon.

My dealer who completed this was Dick Lovett in Bristol UK if you are interested, speak to a guy call Nigel who is the technical service manager there.
