device entry for FW tape drive?

Hey all,

I'm trying to use rmt, dump, and mtio in order to backup data to a LaCie 1394 tape drive. I am using Mac OS X 10.3.9 Server, and wanted to see how/if these programs behaved on OS X. I'm stuck at the get-go though, I can't find the /dev entry for the device. According the the manufacturer, no drivers are necessary for Mac OS X and this Tape Drive.

I looked in the /dev folder and there is nothing in /dev/tape, /dev/rmt, or /dev/sa*, etc. I looked in the system profiler and the device is recognized and listed under the firewire bus, complete with serial #. But there doesn't seem to be a way of reverencing it's /dev entry from there.

Anybody done this before and can offer some assistance?

P.S. I know I can use retrospec and BRU, I am just trying to experiment with these commands.

Ack, never mind

I just found out what the issue is. If a kernel extension (KEXT) doesn't publish it's instances as devfs_nodes then I won't see it in the /dev directory but some application may still be able to use it. So either a) retrospect and BRU install a KEXT to deal with the tape drive, or b) the KEXT to handle the tape drive is already installed with the OS and simply doesn't publish devfs_nodes. Either way, I'm not writing my own KEXT for this, so unless somebody has free one I'm of luck.

Anybody know of a generic KEXT for tape drives that publishes devfs_nodes? Or even an open source one that doesn't, at least I could try to add that functionality to a working KEXT... depending on how hard it is and how much documentation is available.

Terry.
