iTunes Freezes when ipod is connected

THIS IS GETTING STUPID. WHEN IS THE STUPID APPLE GOING TO FIX THE THIS PROBLEM WITH ITUNES FOR WINDOWS. EVERY TIME AN IPOD OR IPAD IS CONNECTED TO ITUNES. ITUNES FREEZES. FIX IT APPLE. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS. UNINSTALLING ITUNES AND REINSTALLING DOES NOT WORK. FIX IT. TIM COOK IS THE BIGGEST IDIOT.

Try disabling iTunesHelper. I had this issue on both my Mac and Windows 8.1 machine, and removed iTunesHelper from startup items (Mac), and disabled it in MSCONFIG (Windows) and it seems to have fixed all issues with sync.

The only thing that worked for me was:

1. Disconnect iPod
2. Quit iTunes
3. Show hidden files with Finder. in Terminal: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true;killall Finder
4. Manually enable disk mode on the iPod
5. Connect iPod
6. Open the iPod desktop icon with Finder, drag the iPod_Control folder to the Trash, empty the Trash
7. Eject iPod, disconnect it, turn it off, turn it back on
8. Reset Finder's hidden file preference in Terminal: defaults delete com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles;killall Finder
9. Open iTunes
10. Connect iPod
11. Reset iPod using iTunes

That fixed it for me.

EDIT: Oops - I just noticed that this thread is about donnecting iPod to Windows. My instructions are for a Mac. Sorry about any confusion.

Excellent! This solved my problem (although I'm a total newbie) Now it is syncing perfectly. Thank you sooo much!

It crashed again! 😕 When I get up to half of my music library, itunes says that it can't find the ipod!
Any suggestions?

I'm joining this thread when my 80GB Classic threw up and locked up iTunes hard a few days ago out of the blue. I'm decent with computers and couldn't see any obvious reason for the change so I shrugged my shoulders, chalked it up to gremlins and got to work. I gleaned through many of these post and some are for Mac and my steps below are below.

Software:

Win7 64-bit, Using latest version of iTunes 12.0.1.26

Background & Steps in Detail:

Note: Not sure if you can skip to step 5 using your current version of iTunes as 12 is new-ish and is a bit different. Read up on other forums it if you'd like more information on it.

1) I'm using the latest because this issue started with the previous version of iTunes and upgrading to 12 didn't resolve the issue.

2) Thankfully I had a full and recent backup just in case... and for general principles I closed all non-essential programs.

3) I completely uninstalled iTunes older version using and following the steps in detail and in order.

Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

4) Downloaded full version of latest iTunes and installed.

5) Plugged in Classic and it locked up iTunes like a wrestler in a choke hold.

6) Finally killed iTunes using Task Manager after multiple tries.

7) Opened Computer in Windows Explorer and right clicked on iPod in the display.

8) Go to Properties > Tools tab > Click Check now button under first section- Error Checking.

- Check both boxes, paraphrased below, as just the first one didn't resolve the lock up issue.

... Automatically fix errors...

... Scan/Recover.. bad sectors...

- Click Start and walk away for ~10 minutes for an 80GB Classic, your mileage may vary.

9) Once confirmation message displays view the details as you see fit and close it.

10) I right clicked on the iPod in Computer/Windows Explorer and Ejected it.

11) Shutdown & Started Windows > Started iTunes > Reconnected Classic.

12) iTunes did not lock up and suggested I restore the Classic to default settings, which I did successfully.

13) I have since dropped quite a few songs, audio books, etc on it without any issues.

Sorry. I tried everything you suggested but Ipod still freezes Itunes. After a while.the PC shuts down to protect itself.

Sigh, my Classic locked up iTunes last night... hard during a sync. It's been fine for a couple of months and not sure what's going on and need to do some more searching/research. I wonder if my Classic has developed a hard drive issue or something else causing the problems with iTunes as a best guess on where the problem stems from.

I had to run Win7 Check Disc to get Windows to recognize the Classic again and now iTunes wants to restore it. Not sure how to stop the sync to restore and try to manually manage the sync and try it incrementally in case that's the problem- to many songs at once. No telling.

Thank you Jay Dee Dee. Incredible that I thought the problem was a new cable I had, because I used to have an old one that worked fine. But something in my mind kept saying it was ridiculous that the problem was the cable. I tried various things and nothing worked. With me, I just went to iTunes, deleted all podcasts and then plugged the ipod. Synced perfectly! Thanks again!

Worked for me. Tried all the solutions mentioned on here. Didn't work. Found this video on YouTube. Crappy quality but it fixed it for me.
