Uscing iChat behind D-Link DIR-655 Router

I have been having a lot of trouble getting ichat to work for me. I have an aol account and when i add buddies (.mac and so on), it shows they are offline, but they are online. I am behind a router, which could be the issue. The main internet is connected through my dads PC windows xp computer. I went through the dlink settings on his computer and attempted to port forward like some websites have suggested, but with no success. can someone please help.

Can you connect successfully to the Internet? I am assuming you are hooked up successfully.

If so, check in iChat/preferences/accounts/server settings/port.. and reset the port to 443 if it is 5190. You'll have to logout of iChat by un-checking the box that says "Use this account", in the Account Information tab; make the port change; then restart iChat by checking the "Use this account" box.

You should also undo the "port forwarding" that you did in the router and Mac in previous attempts, and reset your router to enable UPnP.

Lastly shut off the Apple firewall in your Mac if you turned it on as well.

For iChat settings:
1. Set your System Preferences/Quicktime/Streaming/Streaming Speed to 1.5Mbps
2. Check you iChat/Accounts/Preferences/Server Settings/port is set to 443
3. If you have cable broadband, set your iChat/Audio/Video/Bandwidth Limit set to 500kbps

Then restart iChat.

Enter appleu3test01, appleu3test02, and appleu3test03 as Apple buddy test sites.

I see this device does Port Forwarding (As it calls it) in a way that is closer to Port Triggering to one IP address.

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-655/iChat.htm

It will probably pay to use Port Triggering (Applications in that menu) as there are two computers.

The PC will need the Trigger to be port 5190 and so will iChat for some stuff.
There the ports to be opened become
Trigger port 5190 on TCP to Open Ports 5190, 1024-5000 TCP and 5190 on UDP

Then the iChat side will need
Port 5678 on UDP to Trigger(open) 16393-16402 on UDP.

If you use Jabber or Bonjour set them up as single ports to a line.

Greetings,

I use iChat every day with several friends and associates for video conferencing/video chat without any real issues. We all just use UPnP or NAT-PMP on our routers with no special mappings.

If your router is setup for either one of those protocols, use it, and make sure your friends/buddies are as well. If you have any secondary firewalls set up on your computers, you may need to open the firewall to the appropriate applications.

If you are using a Mac, set your Leopard firewall to allow all incoming connections, or if you have it set to restrict, then you will have to open the ports necessary, posted elsewhere in this thread. There would be similar settings to be made for those who use Winblows machines and it's firewall.

Good Luck - Cheers,
M.
