Connecting iPhone to an external speaker

Can I connect my iPhone to an external speaker source via the mini plug like you can do on the nano's, etc. ?? Would love to be able to run my iPhone's iPod through an amplifies speaker system.

The iPhone's included base unit has a 3.5mm jack in the back. Knock yourself out. However, be warned: it's a GSM phone, and so you'll need to put it in 'Airplane mode' when you play music. If you don't you'll get lovely cell phone noise over your speakers while you're listening to music.

I'm just using an external amplifier. I'm currently running my nano via a mini plug to my amp with a 3/4" plug into the amplifier. I just want to know if there is a qay to do this with the iPhone. I tried it and it didn't work and I suspect the microphone connection used on the ear buds makes this connection more difficult.

You can but it won't hoop up the same. you would haveto tell us the set up of equipment type and model numbers.
