whats most common naming convention for MP3s (what does iTunes store use?)

Trying to organise all my tags and music.

I am using iTunes and some other tag (tag%rename) WMP etc, as some seem to not show all the tgs of other programs)

However what is the generalised, most common naming convention for MP3 files?

ie. track no, Album, artist etc.

Also Ive never bought music from iTunes store yet, only got podcasts and stuff, but when you do , what is the filename convention they use please?

cheers

If you're using iTunes the way it was designed to be used (and certainly, not everyone does), you rarely to never interact with the files through the finder. Everything is through iTunes. And, as iTunes organizes by mp3 tags, the name of the actual file doesn't matter. So, as long as your tags are correct, you can use whatever file naming convention(s) you like.

Track#AlbumArtist, as you suggested in your original post sounds like it would work fine and allow you to search for files. Again, I do almost all my searching through iTunes (and my library is stored on an external). It seems to me that the only time it would really matter is if decided you didn't want to use iTunes any more and were moving to some other program which might care.

Ok no probs cheers for helping

I see you like your iPods with having 3 of them!!

Ive got a 30Gb iPod Video, and wife has a Nano 3rd gen 4Gb.

I really like the new interface of the new Nano compared to my 5th Gen iPod - do you?

I think I'll got with Artist, Album, Track no, Track title for my file naming.

On windows theres a great free app cled tag&rename to auto rename your filenames and help in tagging them to

So you dont use iTunes for tagging? DO you add any tagging after you've purchased a song from iTunes Store? if so what?

I am willing to buy any good tagger as long as its easy and works well, I bougth Fixtunes , but am not convinced with it really.

Just had a look at that MpFreaker you said, it adds everything relevant to what I think anyway, including Lyrics etc.

it looks good, is it easy to use and work well? For $20 it might be worth it, but is it needed or can iTunes do it all anyway?

cheers

iTunes has no automatic tag look up function for anything other than CDs (through GraceNote). I import a lot of mp3s (legally obtained) that need tweaking. Also, GraceNote doesn't provide lyrics. If I just need to edit a couple of tracks, the iTunes interface is fine. But for bulk adding of artwork or searching for release dates or lyrics, I use MpFreaker. I find it works best if you do small batches and keep an eye on what it comes up with. Sometimes, well, rarely, it's way off base.

There may be better utilities out there but MpFreaker was recommended to me by someone I trust who spends a lot of time reviewing such things and it works for me so I haven't looked for anything else. You might find more reviews of other software at www.ilounge.com

Best of luck.

Yeh know what you mean, I have legal MP3s (ones I ripped off CDs ages ago before iTunes etc) and donmt want to do it all again.

iTunes is fine, but Ive done a few albums and its hard work, doing it all manually!

I will prob try Fixtunes as Ive already bought it, and then probably try your recommendation of MPfreaker as it looks goo, and it does Lyrics, which I dont think many (if any) do and that what I want to add as well.

cheers
