iTunes not Syncing

Suddenly iTunes says it's syncing, but nothing happens. The phone just goes back to charging mode, and iTunes is just stuck on the "Syncing Phone" part. If I cancel, iTunes just gets stuck on "Canceling Sync".
Any help thoughts?

Well, yes, the server is responding to ICMP messages, but if you try to establish a connection to port 443 (HTTPS), it stalls at the 'SYN_SENT' state. For some reason, the server is unable to establish an HTTPS connection, which is what the crash reporting tool requires in order to successfully execute, and hence let the iPhone sync normally.

To get rid of this, do the following:

Stop iTunes.
Start Terminal.
Enter the following two commands:

cd /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Resources/AppleMobileD eviceHelper.app/Contents/Resources/

sudo mv MDCrashReportTool MDCrashReportTool.orig

Exit Terminal.

The "AppleMobileDeviceHelper.app" is an application, with no sub-directories after it?

Are we all sure that this is the problem? I noted with interest that while disconnecting my internet conection does "solve" the problem, on my Windows Vista machine when I dock my iPhone two things normally happen: 1) the phone "appears" as an available device in iTunes and 2) an Adobe Photoshop Album "sees" the device, automatically starts and wants to download any new photos from it (obviously thinking it ia a camera.)

What's strange is that Adobe Photoshop Album doesn't start when iTunes hangs (my internet connection is "on") but does start and run right when my internet connection if "off."

My iPhone is NOT set to strat iTunes and sync automatically when the phone is connected, I sync it manually after connection. So, you would think that Adobe would start without iTunes running, without regrad to the status of my internet connection. I'm still dumbfounded ...

Dec 29, 2007 2:56 PM in response to The Great Kordino

I believe that the following processes happen when you sync the iPhone (automatically or manually) Kordino:

MDCrashReportTool looks for crash reports on the iPhone.
MDCrashReportTool checks for Internet connectivity. If available, contact Apple servers with crash log details, once sent, tell iTunes to carry on syncing. If there's no connectivity, save the logs and try to submit at a later date, followed by telling iTunes to carry on syncing. If there is connectivity, but Apple's servers are not responding, then MDCrashReportTool has not been told how to quit 'gracefully' and is left hanging, it is this that causes iTunes to 'hang'.
iTunes then syncs contacts, calenders, pictures etc.
And it is only then that Adobe Photoshop will open.

Josh, I believe you are absolutely correct.

My wife and I both have iPhones. We sync the same exact data, but her's works perfectly fine. However, my iPhone keeps getting hung up and I have to quit MDCrashReportTool via Activity Manager to get my sync to complete quickly.

Does anyone know how to clear out whatever crash reports MDCrashReportTool is finding or where these are stored? Also, anyone know how to disable this diagnostic reporting to Apple?

Thanks

1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. Click the Logs icon to display the list of logs in the left panel.
3. Click the triangle to the left of ~/Library/Logs
4. Click the triangle to the left of MobileDevice
5. Click the triangle to the left of the name of your iPhone
6. Click the triangle to the left of Baseband
7. Highlight one of the logs there
8. Choose File > Delete
9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 to delete more logs
10. There may also be logs under the DeviceLink area; delete these similarly
11. Quit Console

Thanks Rick.

I deleted all the logs, did another sync with my wife's phone and mine...once again her's worked with no problem and I had to kill MDCrashReportTool to get mine to sync.

I am not sure what is specific to just my phone, but it does appear a Crash is occurring with MobileMail which is creating a Crash Report it wants to send to Apple.

It's still strange that it only happens with my phone. We both have a .Mac Mail account on our phones. She has 2 additional POP3 accounts and I have just 1 additional POP3 accounts. Mail works fine on both our phones and both of our POP3 accounts are accessing the same mail servers.

Guess I need to search now on this specific Crash Error for MobileMail.

It could just be because of the holidays and people getting new Macs/iPhones/iPods/etc., but a friend of mine called Apple Support yesterday afternoon and hung up after more than 60-minutes of waiting for someone to answer his call. If a good number of those callers are iPhone users, Apple Support could be flooded with complaints right now about this issue. Given the number of people who have replied to this topic in the last few days, and given the fact that most Apple users never visit these forums to report issues about Apple's products, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is dealing with a lot of upset customers right now on the phone.

The good news is that this is happening to a lot of us, which means it should be an issue on Apple's radar. Here's hoping that's true...

I continued to have problems yesterday - disconnecting the Internet is ridiculous!

And I am not going to start rewriting code to get this to work.

Here's something weird for you though -

I moved my dock from being directly plugged into the back of Mac to being connected via a powered USB hub - NO MORE PROBLEMS! Syncs perfectly and quickly every time now.
