Apple DVI to Video Adapter

Hello all,

I recently purchased this Samsung TV which I would like to hook up to my computer to watch videos. Here are the TV complete specs:

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/spec.do?group=televisions&type=televis ions&subtype=lcdtv&model_cd=LNT3253HX/XAA&fullspec=F

As you can see I have the following inputs on the TV:

Input & Output(Side)
HDMI 1
composite (AV) 1
S-Video 1
Headphone 1

Input & Output(Back)
HDMI 2
composite (AV) 1
S-Video 1
PC input (D-sub) 1
Component(Y/Pb/Pr) 2

As instructed by one of the guys at the Apple store, I got today an Apple DVI to Video Adapter, and I have a RCA Audio Cable Adapter (that I used in my previous laptop, an iBook). I also have another cable that I don't know the name but it fits in the hole of the adapter where there is a TV-display icon. I used all of these but have no computer image on the TV...

What am I doing wrong? Do I need a "S-Video" cable? Where should I plug the cables on the TV?

I hope someone can help me! 🙂

Thanks!

Thanks Michael.
This would mean that I probably bought the wrong adapter I guess, because other than this I would have to buy a S-Video cable too.
I am starting to think that I should have bought the "XtremeMac XtremeHD HDMI to DVI Cable for Apple TV", correct? Maybe I should try to return the Video adapter and get this one? Which type of connection gives you a better image on the TV screen?

MacBook Pro to HDTV requires 2 cables.

Video: DVI (from MBP) to HDMI (on HDTV). $19.95 at the Apple Store or online for even cheaper. FYI, the MBP can do full 1080P content through DVI.

Audio: RCA is an option but not best. I'm using a mini (MBP headphone jack/digital out) to Toslink optical adapter to my A/V receiver. Works GREAT and was only $1.95 on Amazon. Full dolby digital. Search mini to toslink on Amazon or anywhere.

You mentioned the Video inputs. What about the audio inputs to the TV? Mine has an optical audio input with one of the hdmi inputs. The dvi-hdmi cable transmits the video from 'book to tv and and the digital or Optical audio cable transmits the audio.

Do your TV have have its own audio speakers or is it in monitor mode where it needs external speakers? If it has optical audio (digital audio) input, then use a straight Toslink or Optical Audio cable from the sound output of your 'book to the tv.

Hey Rhyd, thank you for your reply!

Here is a complete list of audio and video features. I guess there are some audio features in the Input & Output (side and back) lists too. Do you think I have this optical audio input? - perhaps the "composite (AV)"? :

AUDIO
Sound Effect System SRS TruSurround XT
Sound Output(RMS) 10W x 2

Input & Output(Side)
HDMI 1
composite (AV) 1
S-Video 1
Headphone 1

Input & Output(Back)
HDMI 2
composite (AV) 1
S-Video 1
PC input (D-sub) 1
Component(Y/Pb/Pr) 2

I usually use a Bose system with a subwoofer and two tiny speakers I have when I watch movies. I connect it to the headphone output of the TV. How would it work with this? This is the system:

Thanks again!

This is only a guess since I don't see Optical or toslink audio listed. Try to the pc d-sub.. that is the only audio input listed there that would be the single audio cable that goes out of the laptop. That might be a regular analog connection or might pick up the optical connection provided by the MBP on that single audio out which does digital optical or analog.
The composite is the red/white analog cables.

I can't find the cable type on that Bose page but they try to use the best audio connections. In order to use the Bose from the TV, you would still have to have an audio connection from the MBP to the TV or you could substitute the stereo connection from the Bose for any audio from the TV, or you could connect to the Bose from the TV as a second Bose connection and to the TV from the MBP.

Perhaps someone else can answer also.
