Garbled text (SMS) messages

Every now and then, the SMS (text) messages that I send from my iPhone to my friend arrive all garbled. In one instance, there was an @ sign inserted after every letter of the original message. Other times, it is completely jumbled. She has a Treo phone, and is on the Sprint network. Interestingly, it does not happen all the time.

Has anyone here experienced this? Does anyone know the cause/cure for this?

Thanks!

Are you using any symbols, etc.....that maybe your friends phone does not have in their phone? I know when I went into the Spanish mode (for the fun of it) on my phone and put in the upside down question mark and upside down exclamation point....and sent a message to my husband, those symbols did not show up on his phone because he does not have that capability....so another symbol showed up on his phone.

Thank you for the reply. In your case, did the symbol replacement was a one for one? That is, one instance of the symbol was replaced with an individual (albeit different) symbol? I ask because I did use one Spanish character in the whole message (the accented letter á), but the whole message got garbled, not just that letter.
