Trying to import from a Canon ZR700 camcorder

i am having trouble importing recorded video from my camcorder (canon ZR700)... it recognizes my dv camera, a blue screen comes up, i click import, it says it is importing, but nothing... it never imports anything.

this is very frustrating. I am following the directions for a camcorder attached by firewire to a T. i even tried it with imovie 06 and it still won't work. 06 won't even recognize the camera longer than 2 seconds. the import button in 06 appears, but soon after i click it, it turns into record with isight.

ugh... so much for plug and play. this is not the first time 08 has let me down. it is ridiculous that i would even need to download an older version of a software... but that didnt work either!

someone help. apple patch your imovie bugs already!

The new iMovie 08 update has fixed the problem and I can finally use my Canon Optura 20 with my new MacBook Pro! Thanks Apple.

i downloaded the update and it still doesnt work.

but weirdly enough, ti works o my macbook pro, just not the imac... i tested the firewire port, so it's not that.

SOOO, after all this time, i finally found the answer...

"Some camera models may not import or export when an external FireWire drive is connected to the computer. Try disconnecting external FireWire drives if you are unable to communicate with your DV or HDV camera."

I found this tidbit on an Apple support page titled, "iMovie '08: Cannot see or control camera." Here is the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1059

So after I fought Time Machine to release its kung-fu grip on my external drive, I tried importing from my camera and walaa; it worked!

::sigh:: so I guess it's a Sony problem after all; if only I saw this article a month ago... I should be able to give myself points for answering my own question! LOL.

I have exactly the same problem with the same MBP as you, same iMovie, same camera.

But alas, I have no other FW devices connected. Bummer.

Hello there,

I am having the same problem with iMovie 6. I hadn't switched to 8 as I got used to 6 and quite like it. My ZR700 is not recognized when I attempt to transfer the footage into iMovie. And this is a total bummer in terms of timing as I just launched a new video blog last week, and want to upload a new episode this week...shoot!

Can anyone help? Have had problems with this computer before, it's a year old and I am ready to throw it out the window. Am disgusted with the amount of bugs.
