If you haven't setup an iTunes account already, thats what I would do. That account will require a credit card, which will allow you to buy songs from them. One thing that is nice with your account is the free songs they give out each week. They call it "SINGLE OF THE WEEK." Every once and a while they give other free stuff, like episodes from TV shows. They also have a cool part of iTunes called "iTunes U" which is free University content. You should check it out, it is on the left side of the main iTunes store home. And since you are new to iTunes I would suggest checking out these tutorials: http://www.apple.com/itunes/tutorials/

Now with all this talk about iTunes account... am not sure if it will help with NikePlus. I am trying to think back to when I setup my nano for he first time... I might have done that. I am thinking it did help. In fact I was not going to ever buy music from iTunes and just use the music I already had on my computer. +*_I think if might help._*+

Once you get up and going on that check out the tutorial on NikePlus under support on the bottom right of the site.

Now get out and run and rack up those miles. Come and challenge me on the site. My screen name is "memyselfandi". It is addicting!

By the way I am getting ready to purchase a mac because of my experience with my nano. Does that say anything about a product or a brand?

I really hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

At this point there is one last thing I would try to do:
1 - Try un-checking the "Automatically send workout data to nikeplus.com" box on the Nike + iPod tab
2 - Click the "Apply" button on the bottom right corner of iTunes window
3 - Eject your iPod from iTunes
4 - Close iTunes
5 - Restart your computer
6 - Once it is turned back on open iTunes and reconnect your iPod
7 - Check "Automatically send workout data to nikeplus.com" box on the Nike + iPod tab
8 - Check www.nikeplus.com to see if it has updated

If the above doesn't work I would at this point contact Apple Care at 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273). iPod customers receive 90 complimentary care as defined at the following website: http://www.apple.com/support/complimentary/ (This is assuming you purchased your iPod in the last 90 days.)
You could also try calling the customer care at Nike.

I really hope this works out for you.
