Sad face on 4th gen iPod

Sad face on 4th gen iPod

I have a 4th generation iPod that displays the apple icon and when pluged in displays the charging icon. However thats all it does. If I hold down the menu and select buttons I get a little sad face icon. whats this mean?
Also the iPod seems to take a charge.
