NOTHING happens when I plug ipod into my computer

I've tried a different cable, tried plugging into all 3 different usb ports, and also plugged it into my laptop. Nothing happens. It doesn't come up in Windows Explorer either. I know it's charged because it's been sitting in a docking station for the past few days. It works fine and nothing else seems to be wrong with it. If anyone has any ideas/suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

This is what has been happening to me for the past 4 months. I try to plug my ipod into the thumb port. When I do nothing happens at all it doesn't register on my address bar at the bottom of my screen. It would usually show a green arrow with a thumb icon but it doesn't. Thats when I did the run diagnostics from the help icon on itunes. It says that it registers my ipod as the secondary and not the primary. I also have the ipod with the 30 gig video ipod. And now I can't manage my music on itunes with my 2nd generation ipod. Do the diagnostic and see the report it gives you. I can't understand why my Windows XP won't let me register 2 ipods in itunes.

I found a way that worked for me!!
the same thing happened to me and I tried all the diagnostics and updates and none of them helped. However, I tried resetting my ipod (2nd generation) while it was connected to the computer and it worked:

-with the ipod still connected to the computer, press and hold the MENU and CENTER button to reboot the ipod
-then the black apple logo should appear on the screen
-after that was done, my computer and itunes was able to recognize that my ipod was connected to the computer and everything in my ipod was still there.

Anyways, try it because nothing else worked for me. Hope this helps! 🙂

I'm so jealous. It didn't work for me. I've tried:
1. clean uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of Itunes
2. 2 different cables
3. 4 different usb ports
4. slid the hold switch several times
5. Have a fully charged Nano
6. suggestions from Vista discussion group.

Vista & Itunes diagnostics say noIpod connected.

Am open to all suggestions including Exorcist.......

Utterly stumped... 2gb nano 1st or 2nd generation(not sure) will not charge, register/respond to my new PC or a friends... Tried the 5 r's, USB ports are good since it works with a newer ipod and my camera, called apple support and they tried to sell me a new one. The ipod works fine, the issue is the software, but i cant seem to get any luck wherever i turn. Newest version of Itunes works fine with the newer ipod, but no luck with my tried and true... is there any hope?

Sounds like I am not the only one having problems. Yesterday morning the Nano was fine, synced with laptop etc. Yesterday evening it would charge but comes up with USB device not recognised or faulty on the PC. I have tried the reset, disk mode etc with no success. However, it is charging OK. I have tried 3 computers, my daughter's Nano etc and am convinced that it is not the cable or the PC. Question: I tried to restore factory default setting but nothing seemed to happen, it did not wipe the songs as I had expected. The Ipod still works OK, plays songs etc, but will not talk to a PC. My local Apple service centre tells me the USB connector is faulty but only because the Ipod was not recognised. I think there could be more to this than that simple answer.

my computer will not recognize my ipod touch.
it charges fine, but doesnt show up in "my coumpter" or itunes at all.
the weird thing is, on other people's computer i plug it in and it shows up right away. *why is it not that easy on mine? *
