Why does Apple TV disconnect from wireless network?

Each time Apple TV goes idle it disconnects from my wireless network (AP Extreme 802.11n). Why?

I select my network, enter password, stream my iTunes library fine. But if I stop using the Apple TV for a while I have to re-select my wireless network and re-enter my password. I shouldn't have to do this.

My PC laptop stays connected to this network just fine (in fact I'm using it to write this post), so why won't my Apple TV? So far, my experience with Apple's wireless products suggets they have seriously missed the mark.

Didn't for me. In fact 2.0.1 brought all this on.
I'd had the occasional crash and reset while in 2.0 but never any network problems with my Airport Expreme N network.
Now with 2.0.1 i'm knee deep in network and crash problems. I see some of the suggestions above and I'll try those but i hope that 2.0.2 can straighten this out.

When will Apple finally resolve this bug? With each new Apple TV update, my hopes are raised only to discover the problem is actually worse. With the recent 2.0.2 release, it is the worse it has ever been as it has been loosing connection with the wireless network daily now. If this is going to be a daily chore now to MANUALLY reconnect my Apple TV to the wireless network... then it might as well not be a wireless device. I'll look into running ethernet cables from it to the router instead.

This is why I'm extremely reluctant to install any software updates for the aTV ... lately they seem to be worse rather than better. If I could at least choose which version of the software I wanted to revert it back to, I'd be less reluctant. But, having only a choice between 1.0 and the latest version makes me disinclined to try any updates.

Please, Apple, just hire a few software QA people for aTV; they aren't that expensive and they might just help you release bug-free bug fixes.

Hm,
on 2 Apple TVs we use, the 2.0.2 COMPLETELY fixed the issue with the dropping connections / not able to use 'n' when the channels are bonded, and the other forum thread seems to support that.

Are you saying the new update that just came out made things WORSE for you? I think that would be different than what most users are seeing....

Nope. I'm saying I haven't decided to trust Apple enough to install 2.0.2 since 2.0 and 2.0.1 both made things worse.

Also, reading these forums, it seems that users are complaining about problems with 2.0.2

Fair enough 🙂
and I am not making excuses for bugs - I have the disconnect on bonded channels issue with 201 as well.
Just saying that on 2 Apple TVs we did, 202 upgrade a) went without a hitch and b) absolutely fixed the disconnect issue. Now, on our end, the APs are Time Capsule or AEBSs....

1) No. Untrue for my apple TV. I've had this for 3 weeks and used software versions 2.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2, and on all versions of sw, a disconnect from the network requires one of 3 things: pull the power cord to force a reboot, press <play-minus> to reboot or manually or reenter the network and password. I tried configure wireless and menu -- doesn't reconnect. I tried configure IP and menu --that doesn't cause a reconnect either. I have wpa2 encryption enabled and have tried SSID inhibited and broadcast and both static and dynamic IP. No difference with any of these settings.

I read your suggestion several times but that does not work on my appleTV. I also read that this problem was due to an airport extreme sw issue but I use a belkin router. all my other apple wireless hardware use this router without a problem. this has got to be an issue in the appleTV (though apparently not all appletv's)

2) I can't comment on this because I have not experienced this with my appleTV (it always disconnects after a few minutes, so I never get to my computer when apple TV is connected, unless I just established a connection explicitly.

apple tv does remember the network id and password. but once it has disconnected from the network (for whatever reason) the only way to make it reconnect on its own (without reentering the password) is to reboot the thing.

DHCP lease expiration does nothing. my router is set to never expire ( and always was that way)

Ideally when appletv is commanded to do something that requires a connection, it should retrieve that wifi network id and password and use it to reconnect. but it doesn't. It tells you to go and reconfigure your network settings.

Yes, I am saying that my Apple TV running 2.0.2 has made the bug of loosing its connection with the Apple Extreme Base Station even worse! Whereas with 2.0 and 2.0.1, it would loose its connection every few days, now it looses its connection with the base station at least once a day. It is a daily ritual of either having to type in my long WPA password manually into the Apple TV interface (via the remote control) to manually reconnect it to the network, or simply having to restart the Apple TV (it will remember the WPA password during a restart otherwise it doesn't for some reason). Restarting means less pecking around with the remote control, but a longer wait time before it reconnects to the network.

I had upgraded from the older G Apple Extreme Base Station to the N when the Apple TV first came out. It's the first series of N based Base Stations that Apple came out (no gigabit ethernet). I am using it in B/G compatibility mode since I still have G devices that accesses the network (i.e. the iPhone). I have tried changing all various settings on the Base Station to resolve this problem, but alas none of them work.

Yet, it was never ever an issue at all with the Apple TV 1.0.x software. It just stayed connected to the base station. It is the same base station I am using today... it is the same Apple TV hardware I am using today. The problem only came into being with with the "Take 2" upgrade on the Apple TV.

Yes, it is far WORSE today after the recent 2.0.2 release... Which is ironic because it was the one bug I was hoping that the 2.0.2 would fix, not make it worse.

Cheers,
Louis
