iMovie and importing M2TS files

Hi,
I am a mac newbie and switched due to ease of use of digital media tools. However, I am stuck with my first project. I have imported M2TS files from my canon HG10 high def camcorder on hard drive and I can't seem to get iMovie to import them.
I do not want to use the "read from camcorder directly via USB cable" as there will be times as theo nly mechanism.

Is this doable?

Also I have a Intel 2.4GHz with 3 GB memory. Is this enough to do video editing?

Thanks,

This is my story as well. Did you ever have any success reading the M2TS file?

I recently switch to a Mac, and just prior to this I purchase a Canon HG10 which is a AVCHD camera. While still on Windows I used the Canon bundled application (Corel something) to get my video from the Canon HG10 to the PC. Now I have a Mac and I moved the video files from the PC to the Mac. These file are saved in *.M2TS format.

From what I have read here, iMovie does support the Canon HG10 when directly connected, iMovie can grab the video, but iMovie can’t open/import the *.M2TS files once there on the Mac HDD.

I'm thinking about using Voltaic - 1.2.1 and just converting the files.
