16gb iPod Touch does not hold 3,500 songs

My 16gb iPod Touch is supposed to hold 3,500 songs. I have about 425 songs on my iPod and there is only 5.6 gb left. I have 1 30 minute video and 3 pictures, so i do not understand why so little space is left. Please reply with any suggestions on how to fix this problem. Thanks.

Sort your songs in iTunes by Size..
If that column doesn't exist, add it.
Control-click on any column heading and check the Size option.
Now, sort by size and look at your files.
Most songs average about 1MB per minute - so a 3 minute song should be 3MB.
You may have ripped your songs in Apple Lossless Format, which are huge files in comparison.
Or, possibly you copied over AIFF files - the native format of CDs, which are ~10MB per minute.

PS - that number of 3500 is a rough estimate based on certain criteria.

The import quality was set to 128, so that wasn't the problem.

I figured out how to fix the problem, though. I highlighted all my songs that were not in the AAC format and then clicked on Advanced -> convert selection to AAC. Once the conversion finished (it took a long time), and I deleted the original, larger files it greatly reduced the size of my library and increased the space left on my iPod.

Would restoring it help? Do you have any other stuff in there (for example, as a result of JB) that may not be "accounted for" by iTunes.

Here's what I'd try:

Turn off all syncing in iTunes (ie: uncheck syncing in Movies, Photos, etc.)

Do a full sync.

Go into Settings > General on the iPod Touch and select "Erase Content and settings"

Do a shutdown (hold top button for 10 seconds and slide to power off)

Power back on

Connect to iTunes and let it do any syncing

Do a restore from iTunes

Finally, re-check everything you want to sync and then do a final full sync

It may take a while depending on your volume, but at that point, you should have a "clean" setup.

Many of my songs were in the WAV and MP3 formats which took up a lot of space. The MP3 format is only a little more memory per song, but the WAV songs were 10x larger in memory than the converted AAC songs. Once I converted the songs to AAC, they took up much less space. In fact, the amount of music on my iPod took up about 10gb before the conversion and only 2.75gb after the conversion.
