Ipod keeps restarting

I encountered this problem as my Ipod was connected into a new alarm and speaker system that I had recently gotten specifically made for the Ipod. Now, while i was using this, the screen happened to freeze, so while it was still connected into this system I reset the Ipod by holding down the menu and select buttons. After I had done this my Ipod began to continuously restart itself over and over again, never making it to the main screen. All that shows it the apple icon for about 15 second and then the screen flashes white, and then it just repeats that. I have tried restarting it again, holding the reset buttons for well over 1 minute, though it still continues to do this.

Now while searching on here I found that others have had similar problems and there seems to be a way to fix this, though this was does not work for me. I am able to go into disk mode, and my ipod is able to connect to my itunes through this. The issue I am having is while in the process of restoring the Ipod, everything seems fine, until it finishes restoring, and then my Ipod exits out of Disk mode and appears to restart itself again, but instead of going to the main menu like it should, it just repeatedly restarts again. Also When I go back into disk mode and connect my Ipod to itunes again, it appears that my Ipod is still at the capacity that it was before, and it appears that it hasn't been restored at all! If someone can help I would very much appreciate it. I really do not want to to have to get a replacement shipped. I am also not aware if my Ipod is under warranty since it was given as a gift.

I am not sure if this matters but my Ipod is an Ipod classic and it is 80gb.

I am also very sorry for making this post so long, but I wanted to give as much detail as I possibly could.

Thanks again.

I had a simillar problem. Yesterday evening iTunes erased all of my music, of which none but few songs was stored on the computer. I spent the entire night trying to restore my lost music. Successrate: zero.

Anyhow this morning I woke up early. While trying to reconfigure my ipod the automatic alarm of the ipod started and all of the sudden it froze and started rebooting. When completing the boot sequence it just made a small noise and rebooted again, with a swapping sound from the hard drive inside.
At this point, following the yesterdays frustration over lost music, I went berserc!

I connected and disconnected the player over and over again while in discmode, only hearing the alert noises from my computer. Then I downloaded a program to format the junk. I started but stopped quite fast again. I litteraly ment to destroy the piece of hardware. After brushing my teeth I calmed down and restored the factory settings in itunes. Now, it all works again. No problem.

But I will never use itunes for putting in music again, or at least not autosync.
Anyhow, I've searched around and come to the conclussion that a common cause for most rebooting-crashes (as I call this) is a bad cable. If the cable fits loosley then the ipod momentarily gets disconnected and the whole rebooting problems start.

Sorry for a vauge and prolly useless post, but hopefully it can help someone.

(Observe: don't format if you cant put fat32 back on it)

i updated it and now it is totaly screwed.
it just resets and resets. then resets some more.
i tried to go into disk mode (select + play/pause) and connected to my PC and it came up with (blah blah blah, restore) and i clicked on restore, it looked like it was restoring and it said "your ipod is restarting.....etc.." i watched my ipod restart and.......nothing, restarting over and over again.

i lost my reciept for it too. i wonder if theres a way i can return it without a reciept 😟

I had the same problem (restarting over and over, and the clicking noise) after the 1.1.1 upgrade. I tried restoring, and all other hints I saw online and here, to no avail!! Then I stumbled upon a magnificent program called TuneTech. At first I tried using the scan function and of course it found tons of bad blocks. Then I tried the "Shred" option which basically just formats the ipod. After doing so my iPod now is working!!!! But be warned that this will totally erase everything on your ipod!!! So if you do not have a backup other than your ipod it's your call and risk. But saved me a week or two waiting for it to return from apple. If your ipod is under Apple Care or warranty I would go that route first. Who knows, you may get a new ipod (or refurbished 😟 ).

I had been watching this thread for over a month and was hoping somebody would post an answer that would help me. I've been experiencing the constant restart, Apple Logo, reset, Apple Logo, reset, etc. I would plug it into a PC, Mac, Linux Box, and the ipod would not be recognized. Then, as a last ditch effort, this is what I did to get my ipod up and running again:

1. Make sure the "Hold" switch is not on.
2. Press and hold down the Select and Menu buttons. (This will perform a hard reset)
3. The second it resets and your screen goes blank, before the apple logo even appears, Press and hold down the Select and FastForward button. (This will put your ipod into DiskMode.
4. Connect the ipod to your computer and open iTunes. It should discover it now. Next, perform a restore, and then resync.

I had read before that I must get into DiskMode, but I guess I wasn't pressing the key sequence at the correct time. It took me a few tries before I was finally able to get into DiskMode. Alternatively, you can hold down Select and Rewind, just as it reboots and you'll get into diagnostic mode.

I was about an hour away from tossing the ipod into the trash until I tried this.

Sorry, forgot to mention this is how I fixed my 80GB 5th Generation iPod. Hope it helps.

this problem happened to me yesterday. my ipod 5th generation is stuck on the restart loop until it runs out of battery. the ipod does not accept any input i give it, it wont restart when i tell it, and it wont go into disk mode. so i called apple care, and since my ipod was no longer under warranty, i couldn't get it repaired or talk to a technical assistant. i called the apple store nearest me and asked the guy what i could do with my ipod. he said that my only option was to recycle it via apple store, and i could get 10% off a new ipod, so I'm doing that. i have a few words for the people at apple.

I have the same problems after paying for and downloading some songs last week. I hadn't downloaded any songs or updated my ipod since DECEMBER. It had worked perfectly fine since then, until it updated last week and tried to transfer my new songs.

What is rediculous is that APPLE did this. We all had a working product, then they release a bad upgrade, and now our products no longer work. To top it all off had I not PAID them to buy new songs I would still have a working ipod. Is this the way to treat your customers?

Of course my ipod is not under warrantee because the first one had a bad battery and was replaced by a second one. The second one was great until this POISONED update. Maybe this is forced obsolescence?

I have the same issue. Ipod started clicking and responding slowly while I was jogging this morning. Tried to charge it at work.
Have forced disk mode and taken steps to restore it, but when it gets to the part where it restarts it goes to the apple and clicks on and off again.

This IPOD is 2 months old and was bought to replace my first one that had inexplicable failure that wasn't covered by Apple. I bought an extended warranty for this one, but I guess I needn't have bothered since it had a life-span of 2 months!

I think if there are recurring problems of a similar nature Apple ought to replace the IPODs rather than offer a 10% discount on another--- that might also die shortly after you get it.

HEY BUDDY WHAT YOU'RE DESCRIBING IS EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MY IPOD. AND TO FINISH IT ALL MY IPOD IS ALSO AN 80GB CLASIC , ALSO MY STARTED DOING THAT WHEN I WAS PLAYING MY IPOD IN A DOCK ALARM CLOCK, ALSO MY GOES IN DISK MODE BUT WHEN I COME OUT OF THAT IT KEEPS DOING THE SAME.

IVE DONE A DIAGNOSTIC MODE AND IT STUCKS IN THE USB/FIREWIRE CHECK UP,

IN REGARDS TO THE WARRANTY U CAN CHECK THAT UP IN SUPPORT UNDER THE WARRANTY THEME. RIGHT HERE IN THE APPLE SITE. ALL U NEED IS THE SERIAL NUMBER IN THE BACK OF YOUR IPOD. YOU HAVE ONE YEAR OF APPLE WARRANTY IN THIS CASE.

LEY ME KNOW IF U FIND SOMETHING NEW.
