Display ripples while scrolling web pages

Hello,

While using the trackpad to scroll down a web page, my MBP gets ripples on the display. I looked at the activity Monitor while doing this and it never went passed 60% used. I have 2g of RAM with the 2.2ghz processor. Is this normal??

Thanks in adv.

I also have this problem! I am using fire fox at the moment and it isn't doing it anymore.I really like Safari but can't stand the ripples. It seems the only application it does it in is Safari.

YES!
It seems that we have finally won this battle... Well, sort of a battle. Took Apple 9 months to fix this... WOW. And they still never really said this was a problem and in the update it seems that the only thing that could refer to this problem was "Includes extensive graphics enhancements."

But yes. Finally fixed. I'm kind of glad. I have a friend that hates Macs and was using my MBP and the ripples were happening and he started hatin' and sheet. Ya know?

did the 10.5.5 update exactly 24 hours ago, been running the battery on and off, MBP sleep, lid closed, then opened, every possible scenario that triggers it during normal use. The problem seems to be corrected with this update. I usually experienced it twice a day since last April with the above use, but nothing now. Two finger scroll in Safari is fine, video/animation playback isn't flickering. Had to check a few times if I was plugged in haha.... Glad it was fixed with software, didn't want to go though a logic board replacement.

Just completed the 10.5.5 software update and to my utter dismay the ripple effect has NOT been fixed. Manifested itself on the apple start up page almost as soon as the computer had rebooted and safari launched. In fact I'm seeing it quite clearly now here on discussions when the page is scrolled using the sidebar.

Power cable attached. Looks like I'm not out of the woods yet 😟

Hi George,

It was ordered on the 7th August and shipped 12th August. Arrived with 10.5.2 installed which surprised me a little as I expected it to be later.

Have done a little more testing.

Did a power reset after first indication that ripple had not gone away ie within last half hour of installing 10.5.5. No effect. Ripple still there, in fact its the worst I've seen it.

Done a hardware test - no problem detected.

Manifests itself, in particular, when scrolling using the scroll sidebars i.e clicking on them and then moving them up and down. When using the scroll wheel on the mouse the effect is less pronounced.

Taken a video off effect and am waiting to speak with the levle 2 tech that I have been talking to regarding this problem.

Oh, and just for good measure tested whether I could run my 30" monitor without the power cable in like I can my 23" ACD - No Go. So I am no further forward in any respect since the update.

nb:I am using apples start page and Safari for my test page.

Hmm...very interesting - your screenshot shows the problem to be much more serious than I am experiencing. It is still, nevertheless, no less distracting and irritating. How did you get your screen shot?

Even with another person to help (who can see the problem clearly) I cannot capture the effect using apple screen shot command (command-shift-3). When in motion and the grab taken the screen goes static.

While I cannot capture the effect your screenshot is not far removed from the effect, except that it happens in one band rather than multiple areas as your shot shows. A "ripple" is the best way to describe it.

As an aside how does your MacBook pro operate with a 30" screen ?

The rippling effect on my Macbook pro looks the same as the screenshot posted. When it happens it sometimes stays like that even when I stop scrolling, which is why I can take a screenshot of it. I've noticed if you attempt to take a screenshot using command-4 the rippled text actually disappears while you are drawing a marquee around it, which is why you have to use command-3 to capture it. Command-3 snaps the entire screen.

I most frequently have the ripple effect when I'm using a word processor (Scrivener), but that's because that's what I do most on my Macbook. Even that is a fairly rare event, maybe once or twice a week. It always clears up if I reboot. I've only had the ripple effect once while using Safari, and it was a particularly bad episode.

I'll be installing the latest OS 10.5.5 when I get home from my trip and I'll have to wait and see at least a week to post my results. I'm still following this thread very closely, so please post your results everyone.
