Quicktime problem with .mp4 files

Since updating from 7.3.0 to 7.3.1 I'm finding that Quicktime won't play the video on .mp4 files, it plays the audio just fine, but shows a blank screen. The strangest part is that it's fine on two other computers, only one, a G4 iMac (800MHz, 512mb). Is it simply the low spec of the computer?

iMac, MacBook, PowerMac G4, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

For the record, the same files for me that stopped playing after this Quicktime update no longer play on my AppleTV after I upgraded to 2.0.

Same problem after the upgrade to QuickTime 7.4.1 The preview looks and plays like an audio file, but the video only plays when imported to iTunes. Earlier files saved as .mov still work. Very odd!

Can anybody help me? Should i put my question in another forum?

To clarify things I am almost certain that I downloaded and Installed (with Pacifist) quicktime for leopard but my imac g5 is running tiger.

There is no such thing as a Leopard version of QuickTime.
Leopard shipped with QuickTime 7.3 and you can't install older QuickTime versions on it. But you can install any version 7 QuickTime on Tiger. 10.4 (Tiger) shipped with QuickTime version 7.

Hmm well to clarify I think I downloaded http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime731forleopard.html and used pacisit to overwrite files when I installed it.

Since then I have not been able to login normally or in safe made and get the message:

"getty:/dev/console: Operation not supported by device"

That download is an "update" and they can be OS specific. A download from Apple's pages would have been the most current release which would install on any supported machine.
Now that you've mucked up your entire computer your only options are archive and install from the OS installer DVD.
