Motorola RAZR v3

Just purchased the Motorola RAZR v3 after seeing it on the apple isync website.

It connects well with iSync using tiger and bluetooth.

Have worked out how to send and recieve pictures between devices.

My problems are that when downloading info from address book to phone. I get two seperate listings on the phone for phone number and email address for each person. Who can I get them to merge on the phone?

Another thing is that there is no where to store postal addresses. Big disappointment.

Nowhere to store any other info like my old Nokia could in its wallet area.

When sending appointments to phone. Appointments appear in phone, but the alarm time dosn't register.

Also no birthday dates with alarms where downloaded either.

I like the look of the phone. Very sexy. But its software and compatability are poor. Would rather get rid of all games and other gimmicky rubbish off the phone to have these other more important features to work.

I rang Motoroller who gave me the runaround. There tech department in Sydney told me they do not support mac or no anything about it. They said I should call Apple support. I think apple should remove the phone from its website!

Anyone have any suggestions or similar problems. Out there.

Thanks

Hi Jono,

I have a far more outdated Motorola but your disappointment sounds similar to mine when I got iSync working (my A835 isn't officially supported by iSync).

From what I can see in the V3 handbook, the phonebook entries only allow one piece of information - either a phone number or an email address. Hence if your Mac address book has both you end up with two entries on the phone. And there ain't no address info or anything like that.

This isn't a problem with iSync - it's the limited feature set of the Moto firmware from what I can tell.

Keep your ears tuned to any Moto forums in case there is a firmware upgrade issued but don't hold your breath as they don't seem to happen very often.

I have to say that I'm very disappointed in the V3 address book. I just bought this RAZR two days ago, and managed to get it syncing with Tiger with little problem. The phone sure looks nice, and I like the size of it. But now I remember why I switched from Moto to Nokia years ago: Moto just doesn't know how to make a good phone. The software stinks. I'm probably going to return this phone and get the Nokia 6620 tonight.

The upside is that although the Nokia 6620 is a bigger phone, it syncs very fast with Tiger, and the address book can store just about everything I have in the Mac Address Book itself.

Hi Craig,

If you're successfully syncing your Razr over Bluetooth using iSync, could you post your phone's software, flex, and language versions? I can't get sync to work over Bluetooth, and I'm trying to figure out if I need to change either the firmware or flex on the phone. The version numbers are available under Settings->Phone Status->Other Information.

Thanks!

this all makes me very nervous, since i just ordered tiger so i could sync with Razor. i needed to get the addresses off my treo 600 & transfer to razor. i was told by apple that tiger would do the job. the mystery builds. however, i think it is the phone that is lacking. since i have had it..the reception is stinks very often. never had that problem b4 & i was even with Sprint!!

you do have tiger & isync 2.0, right. this i know is suppose to do the job

SUCCESSSSS !!!

Using everybody's advice, I was able to establish Bluetooth connectivity with my phone, and use the BT file exchange without trouble. But getting iSync to recognize the phone wasn't happening.

Turns out, my trouble was that my Tiger install was an "upgrade" rather than an "archive and install." Grrrr. Check out this link. It appears to be on an unrelated topic, but solves another problem I had after my Tiger install. Turns out, it also solved this one.

After taking the described steps (setting up a new location,) I deleted the bluetooth connections on the phone and on the iMac, and deleted the USB Razr device from iSync. Then I started over, and when I established the bluetooth connection, it finally recognized the Razr as a phone and not a computer, and it gave me the option of iSync for contacts!!! I chose that, and it started iSync for me and added the Razr without further action on my part!

Can you tell that I'm excited?

Off to tackle my Airport Express issues now 😉

Jono,
So does this mean if I upgrade to Tiger and isync 2.0 I can sync my contacts without using any hacks? I have been watching threads on the Nokia 6670 and 7610 and it seems like users can only get it to work using a hack. Furthermore, I think isync is only compatible with 6670(b) model which is not available in the south pacific. Id prefer to purchase a phone that is compatible (as apple says in their compatible devices list) without having to mess around for hours. Theres no doubt the RAZR is a sexy phone, but does it perform as well as a Nokia?

Jono90,

You mention "Have worked out how to send and receive pictures between devices."

Have you been able to

1) have iSync send pics from Apple's Addressbook to RAZR?
2) get pics taken with the RAZR camera onto the Mac?

I have not been able to do either. I believe the first is not supported. And the second just does not seem to work when trying to connect to the device. Just wondering if you have any advice.

Thanks,
Ward

I have not been able to do item 1. However, I have transferred many pictures from my phone to my Mac. The procedure that works for me is this one:

1) Turn on bluetooth on the V3
2) Pick "Browse Device" from the blueooth menu on the mac
3) Click "Browse" to select the V3
4) Double click on the pictures folder in the Bluetooth File Exchange dialog
5) Select the picture you want
6) Click "get"

You can't import them directly into iPhoto 😟 You'll need to save them somewhere and then import them seperately if that's what you want.

I was quite keen to get the Razr when it was first launched, but I was able to have a quick play with one in a shop. The first thing I checked was whether the phone book stored addresses.

It didn't, so I didn't buy it. Simple as that.

Odd that they lose sales (or disappoint customers) over something so simple.

I bought the Sony Ericsson K700i instead and have been fairly satisfied. At the time, iSync didn't transfer addresses to the phone (even though it has the spaces to store it) but fortunately Tiger resolved this!

Bilbo,
Ive just switched from the K700i to the Razr and id have to say that it is a flaw of the V3 but for my purposes one im willing to live with. Also,If you have multiple numbers stored for one contact you have to make sure they are categorized correctly since the RAZR doesnt show which number you have stored till after you select it and are ready to send. I much prefered the sony for the layout of the phone book.

On the plus side, the memory of the RAZR is much bigger. Each time i wanted to sync contacts I had to delete numbers from my K700i since the phone memory was full. The reception on the V3 is better, the speaker phone is an added bonus and who can fault a titanium finish to match the Powerbook?

In my case, Nokia lost a customer since I was orginally looking at a 6670 but after several weeks of postings I realized that only the 6670(b) is compatible and only the 6670 is sold in my region. I was disappointed since Apple listed it as a supported device, but only after adding a hack which is something im not interested in fiddling with.

Anyway, ive successfully downloaded my contacts to my V3 with the USB cable (phew!) and am looking forward to upgrading to Tiger so I can take advantage of bluetooth SMS messages like I had with my K700i. Ive been able to download photos, wall papers and ringtones with bluetooth. It was a bold step to switch to a Motorola but im very pleased. Its clearly a phone that requires a bit of time to personalize and set up, but once you are used to it, it performs well.
