iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

So glad I kept reading this discussion board. I had this problem today and tried plugging/unplugging the headphones, blowing/sucking, restarting the phone, etc.; nothing worked. Finally saw your post about sticking in a piece of rolled up paper and it fixed the problem immediately. Thanks!

None of these have worked on my phone. It was working perfectly earlier and then I noticed I was missing calls and texts, no sound from videos online, etc. I have tried everything on here and nothing works for me. I am taking it to the apple store tomorro if I can't get it to work!

Well, it looks like people have been trying to find a solid answer to this post for 5 years. Blow in it, spray it, suck it, clean it, brush it, stick a three band plug in it, get it wet, dry it out, update it, return it, put some butter on it and run it under tap water... all to no avail.

The elusively irreparable iPhone headphone jack. Sheesh.

Lots and lots of helpful posts. I haven't had the problem since it occurred long ago and people in here helped me get it fixed. I'm just really curious as to why this is so common with this phone and not other phones which also have headphone ports. Does anyone at ape bother to read these things and fix the problems?

It seems things are left up to the customers to hash out amongst each other...the root of the problem is never discovered and the issues continue(the user above me has an iPhone 5 so it isn't just the 4/4S.

BTW I help track call drivers for a cellular carrier in the US so I get a lot of feedback on the types of things people are calling about for different models of phones. As it stands, Apple is generally a cut above the other manufacturers in addressing issues, but I'm just wondering if this is ever looked at by someone to get an idea of what can improve in the next iPhone. If so, thank you. If not, I suppose I'm just ranting.

im sorry... i got the same problem here... can you guys give me any idea what i can do more.? My iphone4 sound stop working, i google it, i have clean the headphone port with alcohol and earbud, i have try plug n unplugged headphones so many times... i also have reset my setting (networking) followed the intruction from one web i read but still nothing happen.. :(

I would like to know why in all the 569273 Views and 381 Replies.... NO OFFICIAL APPLE RESPONSE HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THIS THREAD?! Needless to say, I am experiencing the same issue and from reading all of these posts, I'm inclined to believe that NOTHING really worked but time. That said...when you pay $500 for a freakin' phone, you want your sh** to work!

Not sure if this has been brought up in this forum yet or not, but I have a 4S, basically the problem is all the sounds work excpet when music is played. text message alerts, phone rings, all that is ok. But, when you go to the ipod, pandora, or another music playing app, none of the songs will play.

Have tried many of the suggestions here, restored, sucking on it, canned air, etc...but no luck. This problem sounds slightly different seeing how it does play sounds ok, just not music.

Have tried the compressed air. I think the only thin I haven't done is try the newspaper thing. Will give it a try. Only thing I don't get witht this problem is that the sound will work witheverything except listening to music from the ipod, pandora, etc... The alarms work, text tones, ringer, etc all work.

I was assuming there was another speaker that controlled those sounds, makes sense. I have tried everything so assume there is either something lodged to tight to get out or its a hardware defect. Like you, the closest apple store for me is an hour away, but that is where I am heading next week.

arik_s, just try the fix I posted Dec 30,2012, it has worked for me several times on different phones. It is easy and just might save you a trip to Apple &/or some $.

Well, I have tried all the suggestions and nothing has worked for me. A couple times when I tried Countrywench's fix I got sound temporarily, but after a few seconds it went away. Making the trip to the Apple store tonight.

Soooo funny story: I tried everything on this list serve including putting it in the freezer for 30 seconds...plus 10 hours! I feel asleep on that sucker and left it in the freezer. Then spent ALL morning tearing my house apart looking for my phone. Shameful.

When it dawned on me where my phone was, would you believe that IT STILL WORKS!? Granted, it's still in headphones mode but at least the phone still works.

I'm going to just deal with this for 2 months until I can get another. Not sure what caused it. I have had ebay headphones at various times, maybe that caused it. Now using the apple ones and still doesn't work. Oh well...

iPhone4S crippled but going strong

So is this a hardware or software problem? Some of your solutions are software related (icloud) while others are hardware related (freezer, air can, brush).

If hardware, does anyone know how an earjack works? When I try to look in there I see 3 little 'bumps' but is one of those a moveable switch that I need to try to move to get mine to work?

There has to be a consistent pattern between all of these.

All, I believe for most of you it's a hardware problem and all those tricks work. Not for me

I'm starting to believe it's a software problem. Not only is it stuck in headphones mode but sometimes people can't even hear me through my earphone mic and I have to restart it for the mic to work again.

I've wiped my phone and reinstalled it (not from backup). Any thoughts on resolving it if it's a software issue?

Couldn't say for sure as to whether it's hardware or software but FYI the next day after posting my previous response, guess what? Wife's phone refused to take a charge via any method. Ordered replacement charging dock, watched youtube video on just how easy it is to take phone apart, replace part and put back together - ha f*****g ha!!! Unless you have microscopic fingers, eyesight like a soaring eagle and really tiny (must be magnetic) screwdrives - you are truly stuffed. Have bought the s'drivers, a huge magnifying glass on a stand and various sets of tweezers, put it back together but either must have done something wrong, not replaced a miniscule spring thingy that jumped out from god knows where, replaced screws in right order or, perhaps there was never a problem with the original charging port but the wretched thing doesn't work. It now resides in our dustbin until dustmen come on Friday and in the meantime deciding on a cheapo replacement from a well known auction site or paying through the nose for a 2-year deal on a newer version from the rip-off phone shops. Am I grumpy (?), **** yes, her expensive iPad I treated her to just over a year ago has now decided to have a mind of its own this afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!!
