iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

I cannot believe I had this issue today - literally 4 days before I get the iPhone7. I went into panic mode and spoke to Apple Support chat online - we spent almost an hour testing voice memos, restoring my phone from backup and as new - no luck. Then we got cut off 😕
But then someone else took over and 'kindly' warned me that I was out of warranty so I would be liable for any hardware costs. YAY! However they told me of the simple trick of getting a cotton bud and gently inserting it into the jack to clear it out. I had no cotton buds so I delicately used a cocktail stick. Five mins later of tiny bits of lint coming out, hey presto! A bigger ball comes out and my phone went back into ringer mode! I could have cried. Literally.
Just wanted to say "thank you" for the suggestion. I was taking pictures in the rain and thought that caused my phones sound to stop working. After trying several suggestions on how to fix it which didn't work, I saw your post and tried it and it worked!
Much Peace~
Ok this is not recommended at all but worked for me because i was just getting a little heated. (please only use this method if you have tried everything else) i literally just kinda started banging lightly on the headphone port with hammer. 😐 works fine now. really dont recommend doing it but yea
Thanks! Six years later, the "suck on the earphone jack" thing still works! I tried it because I had tried EVERYTHING else. I had nothing to lose. Seriously, what's up with that Apple? I have never had an issue like this with any of my non Apple devices. This is my first Apple device and the headphone jack stops working? Seriously? I decided to drink the "Apple" kool-aid and that did not impress me at all! Lol!
Hi,
I just wanted to say that this has worked for me on the iPhone 6 Plus. This was the only method that worked after trying several things for several hours.
Thank you so much for posting this! Even after 7 years from your original post, it still works with the updated technology.

I tried the plug in headphones 20+ and it still stuck on headphone mode........ i tried cotton tips and still stuck on headphone mode.. tried blowing into it and still stuck..... it was working 30 mins ago and now its stuck
Hi bigdalla, I m gonna worship you for this, same happened to me, spilled water bottle ended with a wet phone, the "stuck in headphone mode" was the only damage luckily. Tried everything possibly can be found on internet, nothing worked, your thread was the last straw for me, and I used all the power of my lungs, and suddenly I can hear the music started to play out, I am over the moon now. just want to say thank you, many many thanks. You saved my day!
ookay so I've been doing that for like 2 minutes straight. Like inhaling until I couldn't breath anymore But like it won't work. I'll put my headphones in & the headphon icon thing won't pop up & my music will play out loud . my brother tried to put my phone in his mouth so he probably got some slob in it but I need help its killing me
Come now, you really don't have anything better to do than troll the support boards and mock people for simply stating what worked and did not work for them? If that bothers you, you should probably stay off of tech support boards.
OMG this worked! Thank you so much for your post, I was getting so upset and imagining costs. I think I might of got water in it today when some idiot splashed me from a muddy puddle when driving by. I'm a mail carrier for USPS, and I was po'd! I was soaked in mud water from head to toe and especially all my poor customers mail for that relay. I thought my phone was done for so thank you again for suggesting this. Better end after a bad day ;-)
I tried almost everything I've seen in each post in this thread except for using the vacuum and putting my iPhone 6 in the freezer for 10 minutes. None of them worked. I charged my phone and left it alone for about an hour, and all of a sudden, it's no longer in headphones mode! I'm not sure what happened, but sometimes time helps!
MAnnnnn I had to make an account to thank you for this. The funny thing I tried it and it didn't work the first time. I resorted to using q tips which did nothin more than clean out the jack. Then finally I tried ur method one last time and it worked!!! The satisfaction was beyond incredible because it was really infuriating me. Thank you so much!
i was almost having a heart attack, when I discovered this issue and nothing seemed to help. And after sucking, blowing, restarting, cleaning and praying, I tried your method and it worked!!!
I've never felt happier, honestly. Thank you so much!
Thankyou! This worked for my hubby's phone too! He doesn't ever use headphones, and all of a sudden couldn't hear incoming calls unless using the speaker. The volume indicator was saying "headphones" when you turned the volume up and down when it used to always say "volume". Who knew it was Airplane Mode - we were going insane trying to figure it out....
Apologies for posting so far off topic on your reply... I’m about to chick it and get a ghetto-burner lol. At least you can hold us together for 10 years with electrical tape and they still work. JK 🍎 4 Life (maybe)
