iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode

Earlier I accidentally grabbed my iPod headphones instead of my iPhone headphones and I think I may have jammed them in there too far. Because now I can't hear any of the keyboard clicks or sounds and when I receive a text message there's no sound either. And when I receive a call it won't allow me to hear the person on the other line unless I put my headphones in or use the speaker function. And when I turn the ringer volume up/down it says "headphones" in parentheses as if it's been set to "headphones" mode or something! Is it possible that I jammed them in so far that my iPhone thinks my headphones are still plugged in? Did I just totally ruin my iPhone? What do I do? Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks!

I cannot believe I had this issue today - literally 4 days before I get the iPhone7. I went into panic mode and spoke to Apple Support chat online - we spent almost an hour testing voice memos, restoring my phone from backup and as new - no luck. Then we got cut off 😕

But then someone else took over and 'kindly' warned me that I was out of warranty so I would be liable for any hardware costs. YAY! However they told me of the simple trick of getting a cotton bud and gently inserting it into the jack to clear it out. I had no cotton buds so I delicately used a cocktail stick. Five mins later of tiny bits of lint coming out, hey presto! A bigger ball comes out and my phone went back into ringer mode! I could have cried. Literally.

Thanks! Six years later, the "suck on the earphone jack" thing still works! I tried it because I had tried EVERYTHING else. I had nothing to lose. Seriously, what's up with that Apple? I have never had an issue like this with any of my non Apple devices. This is my first Apple device and the headphone jack stops working? Seriously? I decided to drink the "Apple" kool-aid and that did not impress me at all! Lol!

Hi bigdalla, I m gonna worship you for this, same happened to me, spilled water bottle ended with a wet phone, the "stuck in headphone mode" was the only damage luckily. Tried everything possibly can be found on internet, nothing worked, your thread was the last straw for me, and I used all the power of my lungs, and suddenly I can hear the music started to play out, I am over the moon now. just want to say thank you, many many thanks. You saved my day!

OMG this worked! Thank you so much for your post, I was getting so upset and imagining costs. I think I might of got water in it today when some idiot splashed me from a muddy puddle when driving by. I'm a mail carrier for USPS, and I was po'd! I was soaked in mud water from head to toe and especially all my poor customers mail for that relay. I thought my phone was done for so thank you again for suggesting this. Better end after a bad day ;-)

Thankyou! This worked for my hubby's phone too! He doesn't ever use headphones, and all of a sudden couldn't hear incoming calls unless using the speaker. The volume indicator was saying "headphones" when you turned the volume up and down when it used to always say "volume". Who knew it was Airplane Mode - we were going insane trying to figure it out....
