Classic Firmware 1.1: What's new?

Just downloaded Firmware Version 1.1. The minor issues I had (mainly sorting of Coverflow) remain... The cover-flow images seem a bit larger, but I might just be paranoid.

Anybody else notice something different???

A new search function looks tremendously cool. Can't comment further yet ...
Hmm - Can't see any obvious difference from search on 1.0.3

Ahh, well ... I guess this is just a case of me not noticing that there was any search function on my ipod before today ... dammit, I've wanted that often - it will be (and would have been) so useful when teaching, and wanting to locate just that track to demonstrate something for the students, something which has till now taken me ages out of the lesson time.

You learn something new everyday. At least I do.

Personally, my mm50 remote works exactly as it did with my 60GB Video iPod - mediocre at best. If the remote is not pointing directly at the right point on the speaker, it does not work. This does not seem to be a problem with the iPod, but with the speakers/remote.

The issue I've had with the mm50 and the iPod Classic is when I change the speaker volume with the iPod docked, the iPod volume is almost always maxed when I when I remove it and listen through the headphones.

No major problems so far, also noticed the static when plugging/unplugging the headphones (not positive it wasn't happening pre 1.1 though).
Coverflow for me now is loading faster as well as navigating through menus seems to have improved. You can scroll further before you start hitting grey covers that fill in after a second or two. I was hoping that they would make the screen saver an option as has been requested by many many people.

Since upgrading to 1.1, I too have experienced the hiss when turning off the iPod by pressing the Play button for several seconds (after pausing the music first). The volume of the noise changes depending on whether the iPod is locked or not. This does not seem to happen if you let the iPod go to sleep on its own. This begs the question - if the unit is producing noise when "off", what kind of battery drain will be experienced?

I am not impressed at all with this update. Since Apple chose to call this 1.1 as opposed to 1.04, I was expecting some major changes/bug fixes. It seems that none of the complaints voiced in this forum (minimum volume, clock screen saver, coverflow sorting, etc.) were addressed in this "major" firmware upgrade (based on comments and my experience so far). Aside from slightly snappier response (which is a bug fix, not an enhancement), has anyone noticed any major changes that justifies a jump from 1.03 to 1.1?

I guess the update is only 'major' to Apple themselves, as they made sure that renting and watching video's on the Classic was fully adapted the day this service became available. Apparently, that's where all the effort of a 1.0.3 to 1.1 leap was put into...

I know that being able to properly watch rentals on your iPod sells more units then a nice screensaver. But why not finish what you start and implement features properly!

I just installed this update on my 80GB classic. haven't played around with it much since.. BUT the click whell is still very much annoying. Everyone thinks it's a software issue but I'm starting to think it's the click whel itself and not the software. I went from 1.0.3 to 1.1 and I haven't noticed ANY difference in click wheel response and that's the only thing I want to work better. Everything else has been working fine for me. but I'm starting to doubt the click wheel response issue being firmware related and am starting to suspect it being the actual click wheel

I sent a big complaining email to Apple yesterday as a result of the static hiss. It's the fact that they always say "bug fixes" and I was so pleased when the TV show order bug was fixed but for this to be introduced was a real disppointment as it could be having a drain effect on the battery. It did happen to me sometimes on firmware 1.0.3 but the volume had to be at minimum level, any other volume setting and it didn't happen. It's the fact that with each firmware release something has gone wrong and when I saw it was version 1.1 I though they would have managed to clear all the known bugs but no another biggy gets introduced. It's as if the Classic is the least important player in the range and they don't really care about it; what annoys me is that I used to own a 60gb 5g which I was really pleased with but I thought with a next generation player sound quality would be as good if not better and the extra battery life was a big bonus but these other little bugs really spoil the experience. I wonder how many months we'll have to wait for it to be fixed and maybe another problem introduced in the process.

I really am in the mood to sell my Classic on ebay now and buy an Iriver player. If nothing gets sorted with the next firmware whenever that will be I almost certainly will.
