Finally got some nice complete answers in another forum, thought I'd post them in the other places people are asking these questions.

When in the Directions mode, check out the "Overview" screen once you have a route loaded. It shows a high-level map with the route plotted. Now, tap the "Start" button at the top right, and it will zoom/pan the map to the route start with the directions at the top. Then, press the "<-" or "->" arrows at the top right to step forward and backward through the directions. The map zooms and pans accordingly displaying the directions at the top. Map area outside the screen at each direction point is obviously not visible because it is not loaded.
No WiFi required once the route is loaded. Very nice!!
UPDATE: It appears that BOTH the "Map" and "Satellite" views are downloaded with the route, so you can view the route either way. (But interestingly, the "Hybrid" view is not visible.)

Answer is yes, you can save a route (one route.) And it is extremely cool, beautiful graphics page by page of the route, with the alternative of a list of your turns in text, as in MapQuest or Google from the computer. Once you do a route, it will be there until you do another. So no need for wifi on the highway. Which is good. Cuz there isn't any.
