I have been using my iPhone with a Garmin nuvi 680. So far it has worked very well as a hands-free speaker, that is untill last night when I upgraded to 1.1.3. Since the upgrade my Bluetooth connection to the nuvi is shot. I get an initial connection, but every minute or two it warns me that my phone has been disconnected. You can imagine that this gets quite old after a dozen or so warnings.
I have unpaired my iPhone and paired it again to no avail. I have reset the iPhone and I will try again. What else should I try?
MacPro,
Mac OS X (10.5.1),
6GB RAM, 4 x 250 GB HD, Apple Extreme
Good news (I think). I checked the Garmin site and installed and ran the WebUpdater for my 680. First there was a 4.2 version update. When that completed Apparently there are number of subsequent updates available including one that is an upgrade to v3.0 for BlueTooth. I applied this upgrade as well and repaired the two devices and the connection is holding.
If this holds its the old rule of making sure that various versions are up to date.
My Nuvi 660 is already updated to 4.20 with Bluetooth 3.0 and I still get the disconnect issue. I'm going to try setting the iPhone up as a new device tonight.
The Nuvi is a pretty popular device these days... I can't believe no one on Apple's staff that wrote or was testing 1.1.3 hasn't experienced this issue themselves. They had to have known.
it's not Garmin's fault: it's Apple's. if you'll notice, your iPhone won't pair with any other Bluetooth devices either since you updated to 1.1.3. see this thread for more information and several possible fixes.
If you did a backup before the Restore, you can also get most of your settigns and lots of other stuff back by doing another Restore, only this time choose the backup instead of "new iPhone." I just did it and everything is working fine with my nuvi 680.
I restored my phone again and started from scratch as a new iPhone, without using a backup. That solved the problem for me. My nuvi recognized the iPhone easily, made a connection and maintained it for several minutes without a single drop. I made a couple of phone calls and it worked fine. I will test it for a longer period of time tomorrow, but for now this seems like it solves the problem, at least for me.
Garmin finally responded to me. This is their reply:
The best advise that I can give you is to not have the iPhone and the Jabra headset paired at the same time to your Nuvi 680. If you pair the iPhone and the Nuvi 680 together (without the JABRA Headset ) the pairing will work fine. You cannot have all three running at the same time.

Really, not having all three on a the same time. Wow, I wouldn't have thought of that. I guess I am lucky he didn't suggest I turn on my iPhone on before trying to pair it.
In the first place, you can't connect the nuvi to the iPhone while the iPhone has an active Bluetooth connection with another device. It would not be possible to connect all three devices at the same time. It would be nice if Garmin's representative had thought through his advice for more than 5 seconds before sending this response.
I did hear back from Garmin. They appear to put it all on Apple. (It's clear that the update is what caused the problem) Here is what they advise, they don't make it sound like they want to get right on a fix for this for some reason.
_______________ Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
We have found that the iPhone will pair when it is at a previous software verision. You may check with Apple to see if you can back date the software in the phone.

Make sure you select a new phone when you restore. You do not want to load your old backup. You want a clean iPhone. It seems that Bluetooth gets corrupted somehow in the update when you load your old settings. By starting as a clean slate, you pair the devices anew and that seems to correct the problem. I restored twice. The first time I didn't select new phone and it didn't work. The second time, I tried new phone and that did the trick.
