Need help with Port 3689

Hello - I have followed the instructions from Apple & McAffee (security software) to open both TCP Port 3689 and UDP Port 5353 and removed any conflicts. My iTunes sees the Apple TV as a Device. It shows the GB left on the hardrive, etc. but when I go to sync a 3689 Port Error is displayed and the Apple TV disappears from iTunes. Any ideas to correct this problem?

I have the same issue. I have a linksys wrt54g ver 2.2. ATV will show up in Itunes on Vista, XP, and Server 2003 but no on my MAC. I opened up the ports on my router and turned off firewall on my Mac, but no luck. I even replaced my linksys firmware with open source firmware tomato to see if that would help and no luck either. I think its something between my MAC, Itunes and ATV and not a router issue.

I have the same problem - The Apple TV is not responding. Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689. It works fine and then sometimes I get this problem. Also I get problems with my purchased content. All this in very clean and standart wireless-n network, latest Leopard/iTunes and latest Apple TV firmware. I tend to think this is some software bug.

I have tried the multiple solutions posted as well. It even looked like there might be an i.p. conflict with another item on the wireless network and changed the settings. Still no luck.
The only thing that worked was unplugging the apple tv and restarting it. BTW, this did not work the first time I unplugged it . It did on the second go around.

Good luck. It is a frustrating problem I hope Apple will fix with a software patch.

Yes... another major bug.

Mine was "supposed to be syncing" but actually did not..for a week.

What's even worse is that these are Apple machines and flinging up an error message for which there is no resolution with a Mac is just not good enough.

Where in Leopard's Firewall settings can you open port 3869? Nowhere that I can find...

Hope they can deliver an upgrade soon.

Same old Port 3689 problem with no solution. Went thru every possibility with the exception of reinstalling Leopard. Done it all with the Apple TV. Done it all with the iMac.

Observation of where I stand.

I can get it to the point where I have the Apple TV listed in devices on itunes.

I had totally reinstalled and updated the Apple TV to latest update.

I can run youtube and all the rest. I can download "Dora" tv show off itunes.

When expanding the Apple TV in the devices list of iTunes I can can see the Dora episode greyed but can read the information by right clicking but unable to move the show from Apple TV to itunes library.

I had recently installed Parallels with Windows XP. Thinking there might be some connection since I saw Parrellels listed in my network even when I didnt have Parrelles running, thought the port probem might be associated since I had turned on XP firewall. (This point I'm thinking the tooth fairie might be behind this whole thing!) Needless to say removing VM and uninstalling Parrelles had no effect. I'm still unable to move files or stream between iMac and Apple TV.

Since this discussion seems to have died I'm wondering if there is a solution lurking in the shadows. I've sure Googled this to death.

Funny thing is...this happened a few months ago and a repair of permissions fixed the problem then but had no effect this time.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. By the Googling I know I'm not currently alone.

Hate looking at a useless brick under my Samsung.

I have had the infamous problem just yesterday. I got off the phone with a Apple tech support person and he suggested the following solution. I updated the firmware of my wireless Router (Linksys G router). It seems that the problem may be with the router. We will see if my firmware update solves the problem. So far, I have been able to sync just fine (but perhaps it is earlier). If I see the port error message again, the tech support person suggested that I go to portforward.com. This website will give instructions on how to open up a port for access with the firewall. In other words, if you need to open up port 3689, this website should be able to tell you how to do it. Well, that's my nickel's worth!!

Well, the value of my nickel may be downgraded to a penny. One thought I had is perhaps there are multiple causes to to the same problem. It seems like everyone has a different solution that seems to work for awhile. Here seems to be the general suggestions:

1) Reboot the devices and computer
2) Re-install software (operating, itunes, etc)
3) Repair disks or software
4) allow special permissions for the firewall (e.g. open up port 3689)
5) Update firmware for Router or re-boot/unplug router.

Could we have several different problems aligned with the above solutions that could trigger the same port 3689 error.

One thing I noticed with my error message was the following:

After I experienced the port 3689 error message, I noticed that the bar which indicates how much space is left on the Apple TV hard drive was completely colored orange. It told me that the value of the orange content was -1.95 gigs filled. Yet my Apple TV said I still had over 32 gig of hard drive space left. Anyone else experienced that part of this problem? Anyway, I think the more we talk about this and share our experiences, the more someone will figure out the underlying problem link to all our issues with port 3689 error. Okay, penny back up to a nickel.

This just happened to me today for the first time. I noticed it happened soon after I tried to sych with iTunes and there wasn't enough room on the TV. This makes me think that maybe it's a bug related to overfilling the TV. I'm gonna try reducing the amount of synched material and see if that helps.

When y'all tried to synch before the error, did you add a new playlist or somehow have too much media set to synch to the TV before the error happened? There may be a connection...

After 2 hours of trouble shooting, I solved this issue on my PC/Network. Earlier in the week, I was concerned about my pc hosting itunes. After scanning for viruses, I decide to restore to factory default all firewall settings in McAfee security. A couple days later I noticed my appleTv was no longer syncing. After much trouble shooting, I determined that I could synce my appleTv when I disabled the McAfee firewall but not when it was enabled. I tried all of the suggestions I could find online including adding port 3689 to the list of approved ports but nothing seemed to work.....until...I noticed the "Manage Network" link on the home page of my McAfee Security Center. I clicked and there was a link that said something along the lines of "trust my home network". I clicked on the link and the McAfee software began building a map of all the devices on my network. The AppleTv is syncing again with no problem and both the McAfee and Windows firewalls are on!
