networking a Mac and a pc to share internet.

Hello,
I have a pc that is running a wireless connection using windows xp and I have a Mac running Leopard. I have them connected but I would like to use the internet on my Mac through the pc. Does anyone know what I need to do to set this up. I haven't changed any settings yet cause I didn't really know where to begin. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

agp, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

OK, lets make sure everything is in the same subnet, I see the default address on the cayman is 192.168.1.1. The linksys default is also 192.168.1.1. If you haven't already, we need to change the cayman to 192.168.1.2. The cayman should be set to serve DHCP make sure it is the same subnet (192.168.1.x) but in a different range than the linksys IE. Cayman serves DHCP starting 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150 and the linksys serves DHCP 192.168.1.25 to 192.168.1.75
How far is the linksys from your mac? you could plug the mac into the linksys.
Here is a link to cayman http://www.netopia.com/equipment/pdf/manuals/33463356_qsguk.pdf
Here for the linksys ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wrt54g_ug.pdf

the linksys is downstairs. I can carry my mac down there if i need to but i am trying to avoid having that as my permanent set up.
I am getting ready to head to work so I will not be able to move forward until later today.

Thanks again!

Ok, here is what I did, I put together a test setup to match yours, here is what I found
from the pc goto-->Control panel-->Network Setup wizard )make sure eithernet is plugged in)
choose the first one "This computer connects directly to the internet other computers on my network connect to the internet through this computer" -->NEXT Choose your internet connection (This should be your linksys wireless card) -->NEXT Make sure your lan connection is checked -->Click next Give it a description Call it mypc or computer whatever. Leave the computer name alone -->NEXT Pick your workgroup name You can make this workgroup for the default. -->NEXT Pick file and print sharing (I had mine on in my test setup)--> NEXT should be a summary screen -->NEXT should configure the share then take you to the last screen where you can pick "Just finish the wizard" and hit next.
Now at this point if you do an ip config you will notice your eithernet connection has an address of 192.168.0.1. So now just a couple of things to finish.
Goto your cayman and change its address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.0.254 if you are going to use dhcp make sure the addresses it serves are now in the 192.168.0.x range. Make sure you set the gateway in DHCP (on the caymen) to point to your pc eithernet connection 192.168.0.1 and DNS to your 68.87.85.98 68.87.69.146
If you are NOT going to use dhcp on the caymen, then just set static ip on the mac to 192.168.0.x range with router set to 192.168.0.1 and dns at 68.87.85.98 68.87.69.146

ok, so I ran the network set up wizard just as you said and i have posted the ip config below. When I plugged in the DNS to the tcp/ip properties of the LAN I lost the internet again so i took them out. I went into the cayman and I changed the default address to 192.168.0.254 and the dhcp to the 192.168.0.x range. I also plugged the dns in the cayman as well. I had a question on what you meant by setting the dhcp gateway on the cayman to point to my pc? There were only two boxes in the dhcp section ... one for starting address and one for ending which i entered as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.253.

Let me know if I strayed.
Thanks

+I had a question on what you meant by setting the dhcp gateway+
Should be default ip gateway 192.168.0.1 this is on the caymen
+When I plugged in the DNS to the tcp/ip properties of the LAN I lost the internet again so i took them out+
Where (what unit) did you put this in?
I think maybe before we get too carried away with setting up dhcp on the caymen Just change the lan address of the caymen to 192.168.0.254 then plug your pc and mac into the caymen and set a static ip for the mac like 192.168.0.15 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 router 192.168.0.1 and dns 68.87.85.98

We have to do this in several sections
First (with the eithernet cable plugged in) run the wizard on your pc (you should have this done) then open internet explorer and make sure you can access the internet. if you can then great, we are done with the pc, and the linksys router, they won't need any more changes.
2nd Change the lan address on caymen router to 192.168.0.254, you should now have pc,mac plugged into caymen. Set static address that i gave you in previous post in mac. We should now have internet access.
3rd If that worked then you can start to play with DHCP on caymen

There might be a few things. Can you ftp from the PC, might be related to windows firewall settings.
What kind of speed are you getting on your wireless connection on the PC (if you hover your cursor over your wireless connection down in the toolbar should show you this?) If you have a browser or other internet related items open on one or both machines, since they are using the same connection, it will definitely be slower
One last thing, the reason you have to set the gateway on the mac to 192.168.0.1 is the PC now thinks its an internet gateway therefore it is "routing" traffic from the lan to the wireless connection, this also could be a potential bottleneck. On my test setup, I just used my laptop to my old wireless access point and it was getting 11mbps. Every once in a while I would have to wait for a page to load on the mac or if it didn't load right away refresh it
I think ultimately you might be better off getting a wireless card for your mac. I have a Belkin FSD7000
on my digital audio G4 that works good under leopard, I was just on ebay, you can pick one up for $16 (+s/h) or less. Then goto belkins web site and download the newest driver and you will be in biz.

I use filezilla on the pc and transmit on the mac. everything on the pc is working fine and i am showing 54mbps. I closed everything related to the internet on the pc before using it on the mac and the google pages that i come up are very fast. I just can't access any other page or transmit.

I guess if I can't figure this out then I will have to go the wireless route.

Thank you for all your time and effort. It is appreciated.
