iTunes Can Not Identify iPhone WIN XP After iTunes & iPhone Update

Just installed latest iTunes and iPhone updates. Now most of the time (some times it connects, 1 out of 10 tries) I receive on the PC Win/XP "An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again." This doesn't happen on the iMAC. It also happens now for an iPOD Touch which was working. I uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes on the PC. Plus restored the iPhone. Still same issue.

Any one running into this or have any thoughts or inputs?

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.4.10), iPhone 8GB, iPOD 5G

same problem here, but mine tries to tell me that it can't identify the hardware (iphone) and opens the windows "hardware wizard" of which it tries to figure out "apple mobile device" and it fails....under device manager, apple mobile device shows no drivers installed. I've followed the online intructions to uninstall itunes and reinstall...didnt work. I ended up having to restore the iphone on a different machine losing all my music, contacts, saved email, notes, etc....connected iphone back up to other machine and it still does not recognize the phone. i have stopped and restarted the apple mobile service also.
No luck...
Would love to hear from someone on this.

All,

Been on phone with APPLE Support for over an hour. Real nice person. Have tried uninstalling, iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Updater and Apple Mobile Device Support. Then reinstalled. No good. Same error. Checked that Apple Mobile Support is running through Windows Services. Verified USB. Disabled anti-virus and firewall. Ran with and without Outlook. Still same problem. All through this, the iPhone continues to sync just fine with the iMAC.

Just sharing so others don't go through this work too. Will update further.

Hi Nathan, i tried uninstalling the apple mobile thing by following instructions on the apple support page. All the instructions where to just uninstall itunes. There was nothing specifically on how to remove the apple mobile device...do you have a link or another suggestion on how to do this? I do think this will work for me..i definitely wanna try it.

Hi Stan52, update from me.
I uninstalled everything (apple mobile, apple update, bonjour, itunes), installed 7.5 - same error
Updated to 7.6 same error.

Also got on phone to apple who were adamant that if i uninstalled everything , set up a new (xp) user account just to install 7.6 it would solve the problem. They also pointed out that if i'd done the updates in the right order (itunes and quicktime then the phone) i wouldn't have the problem.
So i pointed back to them that maybe when i plugged my phone in, itunes should have made sure i did it in the right order or prompted me to which order i should do it manually!
Any how - followed instructions - yep same error.
Tried plugging phone into another PC on 7.5 , no response to the phone beign connected at all, tried installing 7.6 on another PC that's never had it, works fine. Also the delay in putting message up is very long.
Just about to ring support back up again......
