iPhone Config Issue with Cox

sigh Where do I begin? I know I'm not the first to post, but I do not see an answer yet.

I configured my iPhone last night and have Cox as my ISP. I also have WiFi at my house. Ultimately, I cannot get email to function properly on the iPhone - mostly with sent items. On WiFi, the icon simply spins and never sends. I initially received failure errors until I configured the SMTP for Cox on the iPhone.

I researched and found some options. The easiest/best was the mail assitant at this address: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/mailhelper/

However, when on WiFi, the device throws the items into the Outbox and simply doesn't send. I was able to shut off the WiFi connection, which forced it to Edge, and it attempted to send (albeit very slowly). After configuring for cwmx.com for SMTP, it worked a few times - again, very slowly.

I was able to receive emails, but the send function failed more often than not. I couldn't duplicate the sending of emails again after those two. I'm aware of port 25 being blocked by Cox and, yes, I configured SMTP properly for Cox with the username and password entered in.

The only solution I can see is to turn on WiFi when I'm in a hot spot or in my home only to use Safari or YouTube (Internet connectivity), but otherwise shut off the WiFi when I'm out of the house - thus forcing it to Edge for email. I don't want to set up a different email address (hotmail, gmail, etc.) - everyone knows my Cox address - I simply want to get this to work effectively with Cox's email servers.

Thoughts? What am I missing?!?

KJ ~ Ok, so let me clarify something - it's not MY iPhone but a friends. As a result, I can only configure when it's available.

I plugged in all settings and thought we were in the clear. On WiFi in the house, all items worked perfectly. However, when I exited the house and walked away from my connection to push it to Edge, I was only able to send but not receive. I left the iPhone out in my car, went back inside and sent an email from another address, went back out to the iPhone (still on Edge), and I received no no emails. I refreshed several times and no luck.

I'm guessing that there might be a period of time before the email is literally pushed back out. I had to leave my friend's house, so I wasn't able to stick around to wait, though.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance. We're almost there. :o)

The only other thing I could suggest is to make sure you have turned off syncing for the Cox.net account in iTunes. I think it will override the gmail settings with those from the mail app if sysncing remains on.

I actually just received an AppleCare loaner iPhone today and re-entered all the settings I gave you -- works perfectly just as before, which is why I suspect the settings are not intact on your friend's phone.

Had my iPhone all set up for Cox as well. Had the same problems. Then it occurred to me. Cox doesn't use a username or password for SMTP or OUTGOING mail. I had those fields filled in on my iPhone and it was screwing everything up. Once I deleted those optional fields all was well. You obviously still need your username and password for pop or incoming so leave those filled in. I admit, I have yet to try it on the Edgenet, I've only used my local wi-fi at this point. Solved my issues, hope it works for you.

Peder Johnsen,

While on WiFi at home a username and password is not needed, since Cox knows who you are based on your IP address for your connection with them.

When on EDGE, if an ISP will relay for you, they need the username and password to be able to determine who you are to send through them. Alternatively, if the ISP has made the choice to not support relaying for people off their network, cwmx.com can be used on EDGE in the U.S.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

KJ - thank you for the setup with gmail - now i am able to send email. my problem now is receiving email. i have configured my settings as you describe. i noticed that under advanced settings (incoming) the server port automatically matches the outgoing port, 587. does this matter, as i believe i am receiving my email directly from cox, not through gmail?
