Spider-Webbed Screen, Replacement Cost?

This week, through an unfortunate series of events, the contents of my bookshelf fell onto my desk like dominoes. A speaker was one of the objects affected by gravity, and came crashing down on my closed MacBook Pro. The corner of the speaker hit the top of the case of the MBP, denting the case. When I opened up my MBP, I found that the screen had spider-webbed and is no longer usable.

I was wondering if anyone knows if Apple would replace just the screen or the whole top half of the case, and if anyone would have an estimate for the repair, as this is not going to be covered by Apple Care.

I would not have Apple repair this - they will charge about double what an independent service will charge.

Some googling for 'macbook screen replacement' 'macbook repair', etc., will get you to several places that will do the repair overnight for under $400, including round-trip shipping. Not having tried any such service, I won't make a specific recommendation.

It's not cheap - but Apple would be MUCH more.

This is not going to be cheap, JCohen. Notebook screens are NEVER cheap. You might get a MacBook repair for around $400US, but not a current MacBook Pro. The LED backlight screens are expensive. Still , if you look at the following links you will find a price just under $500

Second hand screens (do it yourself) for a MacBookPro run out at about $895 at iFixit, - usually one of the cheaper suppliers and well below official Apple prices - http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Core-2-Duo-Display-Assem bly/IF185-061 Even then they are currently only quoting for the older fluro backlight screen, but would be worth a ring. My own dealings with iFixit, even across the Pacific Ocean, have been very positive.

DTT have a pretty good deal though, with a replacement (including labor) at $850 US - http://www.dttservice.com/macbookpro.html . I've never used them myself but I've only heard good things about them.

Finally, and cheapest, "MacService" in California are offering a price of $485 for an MBP LED screen replacement - http://www.macservice.com/macbookpro.html

I've never used this mob, and I have not heard any reports, positive or negative, about them. For a new screen at under $500 fitted, though, it sounds pretty hard to beat! Too good to be true? Maybe? But certainly worthy of further investigation, especially given that you aren't that far away from them!
