I cannot find the solution to this problem, PLEASE HELP!!!!

My Powerbook is the sole Mac on a Windows XP network. All of the windows computers are a part of the same workgroup, as is the powerbook. All of the windows seem to be able to see and share files between them. The Powerbook can see the the computers that are part of the workgroup, but is unable to mount them for access to the shared files.

I was once able to access these files with the Powerbook but all of a sudden I now get " The alias "servername" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."

I attempt to connect through Go/connect to server and select the browse option, at which point all computers on the workgroup appear but are not accessible.

Having the same problem as George Hill2, tried the iFelix link, but it tells me to do nothing more than what I've already read/figured out.
The real frustrating thing is that the pcs can access my files but i can't access theirs!

I wish that it was true that apples "just work".

Exactly my same issue. The PCs easily access my files. But, I get the same error as listed above when I try to download from them.

There has to be one simple thing preventing the Mac from accessing the files and it seems that it is located within the Mac.

But Where?

Go to your Apple then System Preferences.. Then go to Sharing and change your settings, in all 3 areas at the top... Cheers...Don

When you click 'browse' you are simply back to the same as when you open finder and click network.

Yes, SAMBA seems to be borked lately.

Have you tried connecting to the share by using go/connect and entering:
smb://your username@server/share

where your username is your user name, and server and share are the server and share name respectively ?

Yes, I have tried connecting to the share by using go/connect and entering smb info. I still get the same result.

I'm not so sure that it's a Mac-generated problem.

One of my friends connected her windows laptop to the network, and I can access it with no problem. Albeit she is sharing only about 1mb of files, and has no firewall in use.

Whereas the other computer (PC) on the network (so i've been told by the owner) is sharing about 200gb of stuff and has the Windows firewall working.

I have tried to connect to his computer even when he has turned his firewall off, but to no avail.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Does your Finder "freeze" while you're trying to connect to the other computers?

How about through terminal using smbclient?

smbclient -U <user> -W <domain> //<server>/<share>

or

smbclient -I <host ip address> -U <user> -W <domain> //<server>/<share>

I've got the exact same problems. I work at a small school and last year the computers (all but mine are PCs) were networked with no server. I could jump into anything a computer was sharing no problem. Once the server went in, I get the "...original item could not be found" message.

Interestingly, if I set up a shared folder on one of the PCs away from the server, I can get into that computer/file just fine from my Mac. When I set up a small shared file on the server though, I get the 'can't be found' message. This, of course, is of no help because the files I need are on the server.

check whether 'use simple file sharing' is disabled in explorer->Tools->Folder Options->View

You may also need to disable digitial signing in the local security policy but that was the main reason I could not access my laptop after re-installing it.

P.S Just went back to simple file sharing and ran thru the network setup wizard and that works ok as well so not sure how useful my last post actually is 🙂

Anyone find a solution to this? I have the same problem (original item can't be found) when trying to connect through Network in the Finder. When I try Go>Connect to Server I get "Could not connect to server because the username or password is incorrect".

I read somewhere that it has something to do with the Windows computer either encrypting or not encrypting the passwords.
