Visual C++ 6.0 Developer's Studio

I am taking an on-line class and part of the class is creating C++ programs. The text book and I would assume the class assumes that the user has Windows and can download a version of Visual C++ is there a version for Mac? I have been searching the Internet and I have not come up with anything. Every time I do a search it comes back with Microsoft Office. I read the description and it says nothing about C++. I currently have Office 2007 for Mac but I have not found anything about C++. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have several issues here. You cannot download Visual C++ 6.0 at all. It is an old product and was never free to download. You can download Visual Studio Express 2005 for C++ for free. However, it is radically different than Visual C++. Did I mention it was radically different? If the class assumes you have VC6 then, chances are, the latest free Visual Studio will not work.

None of the aforementioned products will run, unassisted, on a Mac. They are Windows only. They will run fine is you buy Windows XP and install Parallels, VMWare, or BootCamp. Don't ask me which one is best, read any one of the 17812 threads on the topic.

It is possible that the class only uses basic, cross-platform C++ (no MFC and no Windows stuff). If that is the case, you can install Xcode and use that C++ compiler. Still, your compiler would be radically different than VC6.
