Dual Quad-core Mac Pro reboots from sleep

Seems totally bizarre that this would do anything, but he claimed it worked. I recall trying it and I think it worked for me - for a while.

All of this is probably barking at the moon until Apple figures it out. For now I'm using the Deep Sleep widget and it's great. In fact, I may continue using it at night even if/when they fix the sleep problem. Saves a lot of power.

You're probably right, and I don't know how I "un-highlighted" it, but it isn't highlighted now, and everything seems to be working great and I've been working on it for the past several days and have been sleeping it off and on during the day. Keeping my fingers crossed.

It happens in both 10.5.2 and 10.5.1.

I add my name to the list. It's only happened twice though. First time was on tuesday, when i first got the machine, and i was worried - i tried to sleep the computer 30 times or so over the next few days and couldn't recreate. Then it happened again today (following sunday). I unplugged everything and did SMC and PRAM 'tricks'. I can't get it happen again, but who knows. It's pretty rare on my machine, so i just have a general feeling of uneasyness.

I don't even ever want to sleep my computer, but i am thinking it could be part of a bigger underlying problem.

Is the real solution to get a new computer from apple? I really do not want to do that.

Who sent their computers back, and who is hoping for a soft/firmware update?

Hello, i just received my 'dream machine' a brand new shining MACPRO 8 cores with 4gb ram and 1.5TB on diks with an 8800GT 512mb video card, and on top i got myself a 30" inch cinema display.

I'm having the same problem everybody has here and i don't like it. I hope apple fixes this soon, for the moment i disabled sleep mode but it's annoying, i will call apple support on monday, i just hope they fix it sooner until 10.5.3 comes out!!!

I have an older Mac Pro Quad 3 ghz (bought 08.06.2007 in Ireland) with 1900XT wlanbt and 10.5.2+all possible updates.
It always sleeps and wakes normaly, I had never a reboot after waking the computer. Ram is stock (hynix 4x512) and 4x1gb kingston + several (11) usb2 hdds + 1 fw800 hdd.
Strange, isn't it?

I sent it back but I'm hoping for a software/hardware update to buy again...

Same problem here. Hope Apple will - and can - issue a firmware fix very soon, or this brand new Mac Pro will be returned - something I really hope to avoid as I use it for my work (like most other Mac Pro owners I'm sure).

Same Problem here: got the new Quad 3GHz (early 2008) and hade the problem since first sleep mode... resetting NVRAM and SMC helped only for 1 restart. COnfiguration: 2x Quad 3GHz, 6 GB RAM (2 Apple, 4 third party), 2x 500 GB Disks, 8800 GT

I think that nobody has commented something that perhaps does not have relation with the subject or perhaps if has. When my unit entered in sleep mode, it continued feeding the USB and Firewire ports. I mean, the firewire drive continued on, and other peripherals like and USB hub and a joystick showed their lights on. This does not happen with my Cube, that puts off absolutely everything when it is in sleep mode.

Brand new MacPro 8 core 2.8GHz. Base model, all parts from Apple, running 10.5.2 with all the updates. Regularly restarts when coming back from sleep.

Major problem... Apple needs to fix this.

Everything is still stable on my system. Pretty consistent that my reboot on wake issues are from Parallels Desktop 3.0 (5584).

Clean OS X 10.5.2 has no problems.

System with VMWare Fusion 1.1.1 has no problems (yet). Fusion runs faster than Parallels for me, so I'm just calling things good and getting on with life for now.

Well, I don't have Parallels Desktop and never did. That's interesting that you've isolated the problem on your system, but of course there are still many (like myself) who have the problem without Parallels or any other obvious contributing software issue.

I guess the "good news" of your discovery is that it seems to indicate that this is a software problem, rather than a hardware issue. I'd much rather wait for an update from Apple than go through the hassle of replacing the hardware.

AppleCare Second-Level-Support knows about the problem,
as you can "read beetween the lines", when you talk to them,
but is not allowed to admit it,
because otherwise, thousands of MacPro customers
would be eligible to return their Mac to Apple ... 😉

My advice for the time beeing:

Don't send your MacPro to sleep!
Wait for a firmware-upgrade that will solve the issue.

BUT - call AppleCare (and your dealer) OFTEN,
so that they FEEL the pressure of unsatisfied customers!!!

But also, don't waste your time (and theirs),
doing what they want you to do with your machine,
to solve the problem,
because this is only said to calm you down!!!
Wait for the firmware-upgrade!

Well, I swithed off my external USB Lacied HDD before putting my Mac to sleep, I also unchecked the "let hdd sleep..." in the preferences, BUT my Mac Pro continues to reboot from sleep. This is NOT working here. Thanks.
