Hotmail does not support IMAP or POP3 access. so the option is to use the browser (Safari) ang get HM there which is VERY slow unless you are always ona good WiFi spot and has many limitations.

Why is izymail not working for you? if you try POP3 rather than IMAP it works very well, but of course with the pain of any POP3 access (no sync up with the server).

I decided to use izymail and also open a new gmail account... after 3 months I found myself using always gmail, my contacts are all notified, all my email is now directed to gmail account and I am closing the hotmail one.

Hi gphiilips,

This seems to be an FAQ here, here is what I did to get hotmail on the iphone. As suggested, setup a Gmail account and set it up as an imap account on the iphone. When you have done that, login to your hotmail account, go to options, manage your account then click on 'forward mail to another email account'. Enter the details of your new Gmail account here and when you have done that you will need to verify that address (hotmail will send you an email and you just have to click on the link etc). When done, email will be automatically sent from hotmail to gmail and in turn to your iphone. Over time just change stuff to gmail. Hope that helps. Cheers.

A free Hotmail account is not accepted by the iPhone since Microslop doesn't support an industry standard email account protocol such as POP or IMAP for accessing the account with any email client.

You can access a Hotmail Plus or paid account as an industry standard POP with any email client including with the iPhone's email client but you must pay Microslop for this privilege.

gphillips thanks for your instructions on ho to get hotmail forwarded on but I seem to be stuck and was wondering if you had the same thing. When I try to forward my emails to my google mail account it just gives me this error:

You're only able to forward mail to a custom domain or an e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com. Please try again.

My google account ends with @gmail.com. is yours different or have I done something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi tonedef1982,

If you were referring to me, then no I did not have that problem at all. Not sure why you would be having that problem either tbh. The version of hotmail / live mail is using what they call the classic version as this appears to be all that is compatible with the safari browser so maybe there are different menu options or something, I don't know. Maybe Microsoft found out recently and didn't like it and put a stop to it! I doubt it, but who knows! The option starts like this:

Forwarding
You can forward your mail to one other e-mail address. You'll receive an e-mail at that address asking you to verify your account.

Try it again in classic view and let me know, it worked for me. Ta.

Hotmails allows you to fwd email to another HM account or to an email account which domain is provided by Microsoft. The business reason is that if they allow fwd to for example gmail, then gmail capitalizes on the advertising and at the end it is a free service so HM needs somehow to pay the costs.

To the original question, your option (other than browser) is to use izymail as explained above. That will even allow you to transfer email received in HM to Gmail and after a while you can simply turn off the hotmail account. For $15 this is a fast and cheap solution. Just be sure to set up POP access on izymail as IMAP is too slow. IMAP on Gmail works very well and that allows you to also have Gmail on your desktop client and everything will be in sync.
