GoDaddy FTP access

Hi,

I am new to webhosting and servers. My friend and I just bought a domain through GoDaddy with hosting and storage. When he connects to the FTP site through windows, he authenticates and then has access as if it were a folder. My friend can then drag and drop files and web code easily.

I am attempting to do the same thing on my Mac. Currently, in the finder I go to "connect to server" and then type in "ftp://url.com" which then successfully prompts me for a username and password. However, once connected, I can only see the folder as read only. When I try to add a file through drag & drop or try to delete a file I get error saying it cannot be modified...

Am I doing something wrong, any ideas, is this a known issue?

You need a FTP client - I like and use Transmit - http://www.panic.com/transmit/

It will allow you access exactly like you are describing

I have heard good things about Transit, but it costs extra. Also, I would much rather use ftp access through the OS.

I would hope the Mac can access FTP as my friend can in windows--don't tell me Windows has something Leopard doesn't.

I suppose that both operating systems have some minor differences in the native network programs they offer. FTP is probably a minus on the Mac side. The plus side for Mac's is Bonjour, so I just went and got an FTP program when I needed one. Windows users can download Bonjour if they want to take advantage of easy printer setup.

VersionTracker lists a dozen free FTP clients for Leopard. One of the most popular seems to be CyberDuck. I've been using YummyFTP for quite awhile, but it's not free.

No version of Mac OS has ever had an effective native FTP program. Some later versions like Panther and Tiger have been able to connect and download files from some types of FTP servers, but not upload.

Safari has never done FTP very well. I was disappointed about that back in 2002 because WinXP and Internet Explorer could FTP, but I moved on. Firefox users can install the FireFTP extension that seem to work well enough for casual use.

I use FireFTP on Firefox and it's great. It has many features that I had in my OS9 clients that seem have disappeared in OSX versions or became very expensive. I don't have it set up as extensively as I have my other client, but it does support my immediate and crucial FTP needs and works great. The developer is in Spain, I believe, and has answered all my eMails for questions and feature requests and seems to be really on top of things.

This is a great tool and free.
