Strange Gmail/iPhone Problem

I have 4 gmail accounts on my iPhone- always worked fine so far. Since about Thursday my main (gmail) account exhibits some odd behavior.

The most recent message doesn't appear on the iPhone (Mail). It may take up to 24 hours for the most recent message to finally appear in Mail. If a newer email gets into my gmail inbox, the previous message (that wasn't available on the iPhone) suddenly appears in Mail- but the most recent message doesn't.

I've deleted/re-added the email account on my iphone, and disabled/reenabled IMAP in my Gmail account- to no avail. The other 3 gmail accounts work w/o any problems.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, very frustrating. I've posted on several forums (incl. Google Help groups) but didn't get anything so far. I read that Google rolled out some code changes to Gmail last week; I wonder if our problems are related to that.

It's just weird that my other 3 Gmail accounts work fine.

I had the exact same problem -- It's really strange --I called Apple Care and they said to try to delete the gmail account, so I did and it didn't seem to help. So, I called again, and they said to try deleting the other one -- Apple doesn't seem to know what happened.

Yea, I don't think the problem is Apple related. I've deleted and re-added the Gmail account that doesn't work several times- to no avail. The 3 other Gmail accounts work w/o any problems in my iPhone.

It seems to be something specific that affects only some Gmail accounts. Of course, trying to get an answer from Google about this is mission impossible.

I am having the same trouble and have reset my account now three times. But it seems specific to iPhones -- my mobile gmail application on my blackberry is functioning fine. Perhaps it's an issue with AT&T talking to gmail?

It is something with the way the Iphone is looking at the most recent message. I can connect to my gmail account with no problem with Outlook 2007 on my PC. The message shows in my inbox just as it does in the web interface. But on my iphone starting Monday from what I can tell I do not see the 1 most recent message. That message does not display until another message comes in. Something changed because this was not happening to me before.

Hopefully something shakes out on this because it *****. 😉

I thought so too -- until I deleted my gamil account, did a soft reset and tried again. It still was happening. I've since deleted my other email address, did a reset in the network settings and tried again. So far so good... I'll keep you posted.

This is a rampant problem apparently. I found that Gmail IMAP worked fine before 1.1.3 but now it cannot retrieve email at all. I discarded the account on the iPhone, reset it using the Gmail button and manually but still no email at all. It sends but doesn;t receive.

I reverted to POP and the iPhone retrieves mail perfectly now. So until they fix the IMAP problem I'll stick to POP.

The problem seems to have been solved - I'm not sure how or why, but as of the last hour mine is functioning normally again with no action on my part other than turning the phone to airplane mode and then turning it back, and I'm not sure that had any effect.

Negative here. It's not working with my main account. The 3 other Gmail accounts work just fine. This is highly frustrating and annoying, and there is no way to make Google aware of this issue. I've posted in the Gmail help discussion Google group- to no avail.

I wonder if and when this will be fixed.

IMO the trouble is on the Gmail end. While other IMAP systems work fine Gmail now has failed. It would be nice, however if Apple or Google would at least acknowledge the problem and let us know they are working on it. I hate feeling so ignored.

I agree, it's on Google's/Gmail's end. Everybody who has the problem (this refers to retrieving emails via IMAP), please report the issue to Google here: https://mail.google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=imap

Yeah, I am having the same problem too. It appears that I cannot view the most recent email until I receive a second new email. I have already reported the problem to Google. Hopefully, if there are enough people telling them about the problem, they can make this issue a priority.

I am having the exact same issue with Gmail, which started today. It's definitely on Gmail's end, according to all the discussion chatter I read here and in Google Groups. I reported the issue directly to Gmail so we'll see how it goes. Here's a tip. Send yourself a message to see if you have mail and the others will then drop in.

I was having the same problem and think I figured it out. Any account with a . (dot) in the email address does not work with GMAIL. For some reason, the . (dot) does not work well with the iphone in GMAIL IMAP.

I had to create a new GMAIL account without a . (dot) in the email address - now everything works great.

Let me know if everyone that is having difficulty has a . (dot) in their email address.

Hope this helps.. I think it is a IPHONE bug (not Gmail).

I hope this isn't premature but it seems like my issue has been solved. I get the most recent email from Gmail in iPhone mail. I submitted a report at the above mentioned link, Google mail support emailed back and wanted some more information which I provided. Apparently they fixed it.
