What is this blip sound that my macbook keeps making????

I am pretty sure I have this same issue... I've searched the net and found some references to it but nothing useful. I called Apple support and they were of no help either, I did a PRAM reset and another reset that involved taking out the battery and pressing the power button for 5 seconds but neither worked. Did you find anything useful?

My Macbook is less than a week old, I also have an "A" key that doesn't work all the time so needless to say I am not a happy user!

I don't have an Apple store where I live but there is one certified Apple technician, I called Apple and got a case # for the repair of my keyboard's A button and now got another case # for this issue. I will be bringing it in to this technician this week to see what the problem is, hopefully he can find a solution.

It would be much easier for me just to exchange the product but for some reason that's not possible.

I am pretty sure it is the hard drive head. I have the same noise with a 120GB Fujitsu HD on a one week old MB. A friend of mine got a 160GB Seagate which does not have this noise but runs with a higher baseline sound.

Which HD do you have ?

No because it does not bother me and I am quite convinced this is part of the normal opration mechanism for this drive. I have a similar noise on a 4 year iBook and it is still running fine.

Same - blip/click sound from the left speaker area even when on mute. Tends to make the sound just before an alert sound (mail, ichat) but only if it hasn't just made that sound, if you see.

It also makes the noise just after the mac turns on.

However; it's intermittent. It's driving me mad at the moment.

Black MacBook is about a month and a half old.

and no, it's not the hard disc. Failing hard discs make a completely different sound, closer to a ticking watch, this is a single very quiet blip sound.

Same here, although it hasnt done it at all today! Very odd.

If you have the Mail program running, it is Mail telling you it just checked your mail and there is nothing new.

I don't think that is it, my mail is set to auto check every 5 minutes, this sound occurs every 20-30 seconds also occurs with the sound muted. Thanks for the idea though.

I have the 120 GB as well, not sure of the brand though but I can check when I get home tonight... have you done anything to try and resolve your issue yet?
